As the name suggests, playing in a sandbox means you get to do nearly anything you want. As a gameplay mechanic, sandbox types of games are non-linear, aiming to give the player the freedom to choose what to do and how to do it. This category is usually shared by games of other genres, including sci-fi, fantasy, action, adventure, and more. These games can have missions and plotlines like GTA V and Hitman, but the player is free to approach them whenever they want or even skip them completely. Some games, like Minecraft, don’t even have stories, and simply let you build whatever you want wherever you want. In every one of these titles, you are free to roam an open world, solve problems in the way you see fit and be creative in your approach to the gameplay.
