Civilization VII brings important changes to the franchise
Civilization VII is currently available to those who purchased the Founders or Deluxe editions of the game. The official release date of the new installment in the iconic strategy series is February 11, but those fans whose eagerness to play the game moved them to buy the most expensive editions of the game have already put some hours into the new experience. However, the fact that the experience is significantly different from the one offered by Civilization VI is actually becoming a problem of sorts. Civilization VII has received mixed reviews on Steam. In many of these reviews, players complain about the new user interface, which is considered less intuitive and functional than the ones in previous games. This even happens in reviews who value the game positively too.
A possible hate campaign against Civilization VII seems to be out of the picture, and the current situation of the UI has even been acknowledged by Firaxis Games. In response to several of those reviews, the developer studio has stated the following.
"We are aware of and looking into feedback on the game's UI. We're continuing to make improvements to Civilization 7, and appreciate you taking the time to drop your feedback."
It's quite unlikely that there is enough time to make significant changes to the interface ahead of the official release date of Civilization VII. However, this is now Firaxis Games' top priority in the roadmap for 2025 and we will see a patch dropping in the close future.
Not the same
Civilization VII makes important changes to many specific game features that players were used to from playing previous games in the franchise. We have tried the game and there are some aspects that may be shocking to old fans of the series. The changes made to Religion (Faith is not a currency of sorts anymore, for example) and its disappearance as a victory condition will surely leave those who preferred that option quite disappointed. In the long run, the impact of many of these changes aims to be positive and will possibly reduce all the micromanagement needed in the latest stages of the game.
Its worth saying that if you were expecting Civilization VII to be a prettier version of Civilization VI the new installment may not be your cup of tea. If you open your mind a bit and think of enjoying the new experience rather than comparing it with previous ones you may be pleasantly surprised.
