Test of Time update aims to reshape Civilization VII
As it was promised alongside the arrival of the first anniversary update, Firaxis Games is preparing a major upcoming update for Civilization VII that will significantly reshape how campaigns are experienced. The patch introduces a long-requested feature that allows players to complete an entire playthrough using a single civilization from beginning to end, marking a notable departure from the game's current Age-based structure.
It's finally happening
Since its release, Civilization VII has centered on a design where civilizations evolve and transform across historical Ages, shifting identity as players progress through Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern eras. While this system was intended to reflect the flow of history more dynamically, it has also been one of the most debated changes in the series, with some players missing the continuity of guiding one civilization throughout an entire match.
The upcoming update directly addresses that feedback by making civilization continuity optional. Players will now be able to choose whether they want to continue with a single civilization across all Ages or retain the existing system of transitioning into new ones. This flexibility is intended to preserve the game’s new structural identity while reintroducing a more traditional style of long-form civilization development.
According to Firaxis, the update is not limited to this single feature. It is being described as a broader overhaul that touches core gameplay systems, including progression and victory structure. The goal is to ensure that both playstyles, continuous civilization identity and Age-based evolution, are fully supported and strategically viable.
The change has been developed in response to extensive community feedback, with many players expressing interest in a more consistent civilization experience similar to earlier entries in the franchise. Rather than removing the Age system entirely, the developers have opted to expand the game’s framework, allowing both approaches to coexist.
The update, internally referred to as the "Test of Time" patch, is scheduled for release on May 19 and will be available for free to all Civilization VII players. Once deployed, it is expected to significantly influence how players approach long-term strategy and also address one of the main concerns of the fans of the series about the game, which also has had a severe impact on its reception. Making the game more similar to Civilization VI on this specific regard, will surely make the game more appealing to long-time fans of the most popular strategy franchise. Of course, if you haven't discovered the game yet because you had doubts about this specific mechanics, it's the best moment to visit our comparator to purchase Civilization VII at the cheapest price.
