Civ VII 1.2.2 Patch Brings Major Community-Driven Tweaks
Fans of Civilization VII have plenty to look forward to as Firaxis Games prepares to roll out the anticipated 1.2.2 update on June 17, 2025. Building directly on player feedback and in order to follow the post-launch roadmap, this update introduces a suite of new features, customization options, and game balance improvements aimed at enhancing both strategic depth and overall user experience.
Many changes
One of the headline additions is the introduction of new map types, including Large and Huge map options. These expanded maps allow up to 10 civilizations in single-player mode (with the possibility of duplicates increasing the number to 12) and up to 8 in multiplayer matches. This long-requested feature adds greater scope for epic-scale matches, although Firaxis notes that performance may vary depending on platform and hardware, particularly on the Nintendo Switch 2 and older consoles.
Beyond map variety, the 1.2.2 update will introduce significant improvements to advanced game setup options. Players will be able to fine-tune a wide array of parameters, such as toggling Legacy Paths by age or game-wide, selectively enabling or disabling specific Crises, adjusting AI personality traits related to economy or warfare, and altering how hostile Independent Powers behave. The ability to bypass civilization unlock requirements and customize the game's pacing further empowers players to shape the gameplay experience to their liking.
The update will also expand the religious and diplomatic layers of the game with 14 new Religious Beliefs, 2 fresh Pantheons, and 24 additional City-State bonuses spread across the Ancient, Classical, and Medieval ages. These additions allow for more diversity in both spiritual strategies and international relations.
Another exciting enhancement is the addition of Steam Workshop support. This long-awaited feature simplifies the process of browsing, installing, and sharing community-created mods. Firaxis has included detailed documentation and examples to help modders get started, signaling a clear commitment to empowering the player base to shape the game even further.
Quality-of-life improvements round out the package, with multiple bug fixes, UI refinements, and some as-yet-unannounced "surprises" planned to enhance overall polish. Firaxis has also revealed what's coming next: auto-explore options for scouts, hotseat multiplayer, and more refinements to campaign flow and Age transitions are already in development for future updates.
In short, the game's 1.2.2 update is shaping up to be a major step forward toward making the game a worthy successor of Civilization VI. Remember that our comparator can easily provide you with the best discounts on digital codes for Civilization VII.
