Civilization VII prepares for a big change this spring
Firaxis Games has rolled out Update 1.3.2 for Sid Meier's Civilization VII, improving the game on occasion of its first anniversary. This update addresses long-standing player feedback while preparing the stage for a much larger overhaul scheduled for Spring 2026, known as Test of Time.
Update 1.3.2 focuses on refining the game’s core systems and improving quality-of-life for players. Among its highlights are nested tooltips in production menus and technology and civics trees, designed to make strategy planning more intuitive. Several civilizations, including France, Dai Viet, and the Mughal Empire, received balance adjustments, and AI diplomacy behaviors have been tweaked to better match leader personalities. Additional changes include a revamped coastal raiding system and the introduction of an Appeal Lens, which helps players identify the most advantageous terrain for city placement.
As part of this update, Firaxis is also adding Gilgamesh to the roster of available leaders at no extra cost. Players will also receive special cosmetic rewards automatically, commemorating the game’s first anniversary and encouraging renewed engagement with the title.
An expansion-scale update
Looking ahead, the Test of Time update wil be an expansion-sized experience available to all players for free. One of its most notable features is the ability for civilizations to retain continuity across Ages. This feature was announced previously, and it will allow players to maintain a single civilization throughout a whole campaign rather than being forced to switch. Each civilization will still have an "Apex Age" during which its full unique abilities are active, preserving the strategic depth of the original system.
The update will also introduce a Syncretism system that will enable civilizations outside their Apex Age to borrow select units and infrastructure from their peak period. Victory conditions will be overhauled, replacing rigid "Legacy Paths" with more fluid, performance-based goals. Also, Triumphs will offer optional challenges for different playstyles, including military, cultural, scientific, economic, and diplomatic strategies.
Firaxis has acknowledged that some of the game's original design choices were polarizing among fans. With Test of Time, the studio aims to address these concerns and restore a more open, sandbox-oriented approach that recalls earlier entries in the series, like Civilization VI, which gathered very favorable opinions. The update reflects a deliberate effort to balance innovation with the classic Civilization experience.
With Update 1.3.2 already live and Test of Time slated for next spring, Civilization VII aims to recover its rightful position at the top of the genre. The combination of balance improvements and expansion-scale changes could redefine the game's long-term appeal in the competitive strategy genre.
