Probably Stolen: The Price of Honesty When Rent Is Due
An item of questionable origin sits on your counter. The seller’s asking price is tempting, and your next rent payment is looming. In Probably Stolen - Cyberpunk Shopkeeper Sim, that is enough to put your honesty to the test. Released in version 1.0 on October 28, 2026, for Windows PC via Steam, this single-player game from developer Questing Goose Studio and publisher tinyBuild casts you as a shopkeeper trying to get by aboard an unjust space station. Here, a lucrative deal might save your business while opening the door to a whole new set of problems.
Every Item Has a Price, and Every Deal Has a Dark Side
Once a scavenger, you have secured a storefront with the help of a loan. The excitement of owning a business soon gives way to the demands of making a living: rent keeps climbing, forcing you to keep trading while saving enough to buy the shop outright. Wealth inequality and relationships built on shaky trust bring the cyberpunk setting into the everyday business of survival.
Making a profit starts with understanding what is on your counter. Water needs testing and filtering; weapons involve permits and modifications; chemicals require recipes; and valuable objects need appraising to avoid overpaying. From there, your work unfolds through haggling, selling goods, and operating production machinery. One poor judgment about an item’s worth can turn an anticipated profit into money down the drain.
Of course, less honest approaches are available. You can relabel counterfeit products, fence stolen goods, or hide contraband before an inspection. There is a dry, dark humor in treating dishonesty as another business strategy to weigh up. But if your stock gets confiscated, the rent will not come down out of sympathy.
The need to scrutinize suspicious details recalls Quarantine Zone: The Last Check. In Probably Stolen, recognizing the risk is only half the story. The other half is deciding whether the potential profit is enough to make you look the other way.
Across the counter, customers have agendas of their own. Faction relationships can offer opportunities and protection, but they can also attract unwanted attention. Version 1.0 completes NPC storylines, giving these encounters a significance beyond the exchange of money and merchandise. You must also watch for Augs, whose implanted AI chip has gone rogue: overlooking the signs or misidentifying someone carries consequences.
There are nine starting scenarios, offering different ways into this precarious livelihood:
- Apprentice: A generalist start suited to learning the ropes.
- Water Merchant: Test, purify, and trade water.
- Fence: Make money by dealing in stolen goods.
- Gunsmith: Trade weapons and modifications.
- Chemist: Use recipes to produce chemicals.
- Hydroponic Farmer: Grow crops hydroponically and develop genetically modified varieties.
- Aquafarmer: Raise fish and manage tank water quality.
- Rat Wrangler: Try your hand at raising rats.
- Rock Bottom: Start with nothing and face a punishing challenge.
Four difficulty options let you adjust the challenge. Once unlocked, vending machines can keep earning money overnight, extending your business beyond its opening hours. Version 1.0 also brings an overhauled interface, Steam Workshop integration, modding support, and 21 achievements.
On October 30, the developer announced that the game had sold 500,000 copies. The hotfix 1.0.0.5 announcement rounds up several recent adjustments. Meanwhile, Junker, Organ Trader, Street Food Vendor, Expeditions, additional appraisal items, and a main-story expansion remain planned for future free updates.
What makes Probably Stolen intriguing is the question behind each transaction: how much are you willing to compromise to keep the shop’s lights on for another day? That tension gives it an appealing hook for players who enjoy management games and want a taste of the darker side of doing business.
