Phasmophobia sets the stage for a massive 2026 update
Phasmophobia developer Kinetic Games has revealed ambitious plans for 2026, calling it one of the most important years in the game’s history as the co-op horror hit moves steadily toward its long-awaited 1.0 release. After spending years in Early Access, the studio is now focusing on deep systemic reworks designed to make ghost hunting feel more immersive, physical, and unsettling than ever before.
Rather than simply adding new content, Kinetic Games is targeting the very foundations of the experience. Upcoming updates aim to enhance realism through revamped character models, smoother animations, and more believable interactions with haunted environments. According to the developers, these changes are intended to eliminate moments that unintentionally break immersion and instead keep players fully locked into the tension of each investigation.
Major Character and Map Reworks Define the Road Ahead

One of the centerpiece updates is the long-awaited Player Character Update, now scheduled to launch in Q1 2026. This overhaul introduces brand-new character models and significantly improved animations, allowing players to physically see actions such as turning on equipment, opening doors, or picking up items. Death and revival animations are also being reworked, giving high-risk moments more weight and visual impact.
Kinetic Games has explained that the delay was intentional, allowing the update more time to evolve into something that meaningfully improves the core experience. The studio believes these changes will make Phasmophobia feel far more grounded, reinforcing the sense that players are truly present inside each haunted location.
Alongside character upgrades, the iconic Tanglewood map is receiving a full redesign. While longtime players may be wary of changes to one of the game’s most familiar locations, the developers have reassured fans that the rework will preserve the spirit of the original while introducing fresh details and surprises. A teased mystery tied to the house suggests that deeper environmental storytelling is on the way.
Beyond Phasmophobia itself, Kinetic Games is also expanding its footprint with the launch of Kinetic Publishing, a new initiative aimed at supporting small indie teams and solo developers with clear creative visions. Importantly, the studio has confirmed that Phasmophobia’s development team remains fully dedicated to the game’s future.
With version 1.0 on the horizon and major updates lined up, now could be the perfect time for new players to jump in—or for veterans to return.
