Gearbox Confirms You Can Finally Mute Claptrap in Borderlands 4
Borderlands 4 will bring many novelties to the iconic looter-shooter franchise and some of them have been requested by the community that loves the series for a long time. Gearbox Software has confirmed that the game will allow players to mute Claptrap. This robot companion, known for his constant chatter and offbeat humor, has long divided the fanbase. You either love or hate it; there is no middle point. In Borderlands 4, players will decide for themselves how much or how little they want to hear from him.
Surprising and very welcome to some players
The feature comes in the form of a dedicated volume slider in the game's audio settings, allowing players to adjust Claptrap's voice volume independently from the rest of the game. Want to silence him entirely? Slide it all the way down. Prefer his endless jokes and robotic enthusiasm? Leave it up. Gearbox is making sure the choice is yours.
Narrative director Sam Winkler revealed that muting Claptrap won't go unnoticed in-game either. In fact, Claptrap plays an important role in the story and players who choose to mute him may trigger unique dialogue or Easter eggs. Winkler teased a particularly obscure reference to a "terrible accent" from a classic immersive sim. It's a playful way to acknowledge the decision, even if you're opting for silence.
This change reflects a broader effort by Gearbox to prioritize player choice. While previous entries in the series leaned heavily on nonstop humor, this installment seems more aware of player preferences. Giving players control over how much they hear from one of the franchise's most iconic characters is a simple but effective quality-of-life improvement.
The news has been met with enthusiasm across the Borderlands community. For years, players have debated whether Claptrap was a hilarious comic relief or an annoying distraction. Now, Gearbox is putting that power in the players' hands.
Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Switch 2 release reportedly planned for a later date. Remember that you can use our comparator to get the best offers for Borderlands 4 for your platform of choice.
