No Switch 2 release in sight for Borderlands 4 in 2026

Borderlands 4 reveals 2026 roadmap amid Switch 2 port uncertainty

Despite having a contoversial start, Gearbox Software and publisher 2K have outlined an ambitious roadmap for Borderlands 4 in 2026, signaling long-term support for the looter-shooter following its launch on current-generation platforms. However, alongside the new content plans, Take-Two Interactive has also confirmed troubling news for Nintendo fans: development of the game's Nintendo Switch 2 version has been paused, with no release window and no guarantee that it will resume anytime soon.

Paid DLCs, free content, and more

According to the official 2026 roadmap published on the Borderlands website, this year will focus on expanding the game's endgame and narrative depth through a mix of free updates and paid downloadable content. Players can expect regular major updates introducing substantial gameplay changes and additions, supported by smaller, more frequent patches aimed at balance tweaks, bug fixes, and limited-time events. Gearbox has positioned these updates as a way to keep the game’s world active and evolving throughout the year.

Endgame players are set to benefit in particular. The roadmap highlights new high-difficulty activities, including additional raid-style encounters and a new Takedown mission, designed to challenge coordinated teams and reward top-tier loot. Seasonal events will also return, offering rotating activities and incentives intended to keep long-term engagement high.

On the premium side, 2026 will introduce multiple paid expansions, including Story Packs and Bounty Packs that add new missions, locations, enemies, and gear. These narrative-focused expansions are expected to deepen the game’s lore and extend its campaign content well beyond launch, reinforcing Gearbox’s commitment to Borderlands 4 as a live, evolving platform rather than a one-and-done release.

Bad news for Nintendo Switch 2 fans

In stark contrast to this forward momentum, the future of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 looks quite uncertain. In recent statements referenced by Take-Two Interactive, the company confirmed that development of the Switch 2 version has been "paused." The game has been removed from the publisher's active release schedule, and no new launch window has been provided. While Take-Two has stopped short of calling the project cancelled, it has made clear that resources are currently focused elsewhere.

The pause could be linked to technical and strategic challenges, as well as a desire to prioritize post-launch support on platforms where the game is already available. The wording used by Take-Two has fueled speculation that the Switch 2 version may not arrive in the near future, or potentially at all, despite earlier expectations that the game would eventually make its way to Nintendo's latest console.

For players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, the message is largely positive: Borderlands 4 is set for a busy 2026 filled with new content and continued developer support. For Nintendo fans, however, the confirmation of paused development casts serious doubt over whether they will ever see the game on Switch 2, possibly turning what was once a delayed port into a disappointment.
