Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ latest update gives players reason to return

Assassin’s Creed Shadows gets one last big update
Updates & Patches

Assassin’s Creed Shadows just received its latest update, and this one feels like Ubisoft is giving players one last proper reason to return to Japan. Title Update 1.1.11 adds a new free story quest, fresh endgame content, another Animus Rift, crossover rewards, quality-of-life tweaks, and a decent list of balance changes and fixes.

The main new addition is Black Tides, a free story quest that brings a new Templar threat to Naoe and Yasuke. Two elite Templars known as the Black Cross arrive in Japan to hunt them down, but of course, there is more going on than just revenge. Players will need to have completed Naoe and Yasuke’s main story, as well as the post-launch quests A Critical Encounter and A Puzzlement, before jumping into this new mission.

The update also adds Domains, a new endgame activity made for players who actually enjoy testing their builds instead of just wearing whatever looks cool. Domains are Animus-based simulations created by MOD, with 5 different gameplay simulations spread across 10 challenge levels. The higher you climb, the more modifiers the game throws at you, so your usual loadout might not carry you through every fight. There are also exclusive rewards here, including outfits, weapons, trinkets, engravings, a new currency, a shop, and a progression tree.

Black Flag Resynced sneaks into Shadows

Another important part of the update is the new crossover Projects, Riptides and Undertow, available through the Animus HUB. These let players unlock themed outfits, weapons, trinkets, and other rewards connected to both Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. It is a nice little bridge between Shadows and Ubisoft’s return to Black Flag, especially for players who are already planning to jump into Resynced.

There is also a new Animus Rift called Horizon, which continues the strange Animus side of the game. Players need to finish the two previous Rifts before accessing it. On top of that, the Animus HUB has been cleaned up a bit in the main menu, with access now working more naturally from the Shadows Memory page.

As for the rest of the patch, Ubisoft adjusted Shuriken damage, boss armor-breaking, enemy poison kunai, explosive grenades, fall damage, Corrupted Castles, perks, engravings, UI categories, and several character-specific bugs. Nintendo Switch 2 players also get handheld GPU improvements.

Overall, Title Update 1.1.11 feels like a packed final update, and probably the best excuse to reinstall Shadows if you left it sitting in your library. Between the new Black Tides quest, Domains, the Horizon Animus Rift, and the Black Flag Resynced crossover rewards, there is enough here to make another trip through Japan feel worth it. One last major update is a good way to wrap things up. Hopefully it addresses the remaining issues and gives players a reason to jump back in.
