Black Flag Resynced is the new flagship of the franchise

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is crushing Steam
Industry

Who would have guessed that Ubisoft's newest Assassin's Creed success would be a game players had already finished over a decade ago? Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has burst onto Steam with a launch that's impossible to ignore, already surpassing the peak concurrent player count of Assassin's Creed Shadows. It's an impressive milestone for any remake, but it's even more notable considering Shadows was supposed to represent the franchise's next big chapter. Instead, the loudest cheers are coming from a familiar captain and his trusty ship.

Numbers don't lie: Edward Kenway has returned with a bang

According to SteamDB, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has already sailed past 99,000 concurrent players, comfortably outperforming Assassin's Creed Shadows, whose all-time Steam peak sits at around 64,000. It's the strongest Steam debut the Assassin's Creed series has seen, proving that Edward Kenway still knows how to draw a crowd.

That raises an obvious question: are remakes becoming Ubisoft's winning formula, or is Black Flag simply a special case?

The answer probably leans toward the latter. The original Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has spent years wearing the unofficial crown as the franchise's fan favorite. While other entries doubled down on sprawling RPG systems or intricate Assassin lore, Black Flag let players do something much simpler—and arguably much more fun. It handed them a pirate ship and said, "Go make trouble."

Sailing across the Caribbean, boarding enemy vessels, hunting legendary sea creatures, singing shanties with the crew, and stumbling across hidden islands gave the game a personality that few Assassin's Creed titles have managed to replicate. For many players, the hidden blade almost felt like a bonus feature.

That's exactly why Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced feels like the return of an old friend. Ubisoft hasn't simply dusted off the original. The remake refreshes the visuals, modernizes combat and traversal, improves naval encounters, and smooths out many of the rough edges that naturally come with a game first released in 2013.

Are remakes the future of the franchise?

Despite the game's numbers, it's worth resisting the temptation to declare that remakes are now the future of Assassin's Creed. The fourth installment in the series wasn't chosen at random. Ubisoft picked arguably the most beloved entry in the entire franchise. Its popularity has remained remarkably consistent for more than a decade, with fans regularly calling for a remake long before one was officially announced. That's the kind of built-in enthusiasm that can't simply be manufactured by giving any old game a graphical upgrade.

Still, there's a lesson here for Ubisoft. Creating a brand-new Assassin's Creed is an increasingly expensive gamble. Every new installment has to introduce fresh mechanics, justify a massive open world, and somehow satisfy longtime fans while attracting newcomers. A remake, especially one built around a universally loved game, comes with far less uncertainty.

If Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced keeps attracting players at its current pace, don't be surprised if Ubisoft starts dusting off more classics. But the company's biggest takeaway shouldn't be that every old Assassin's Creed deserves a remake. Instead, it should ask a different question: what made Black Flag resonate so strongly in the first place?

Judging by Steam's response, players weren't just eager to revisit a familiar story. They wanted the sense of freedom, adventure, and carefree exploration that made Black Flag feel unlike anything else in the series. Sometimes, the biggest hit isn't the newest idea, but remembering the one fans never stopped talking about.

Whether you joined Edward Kenway on his old adventure or not, this new version is definitely worth a look. As usual, you can use our comparator to purchase your Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced game key at the lowest price.
