Total War: Three Kingdoms is the 12th installment of the Total War series. Developed by Creative Assembly, this game will be released for Microsoft Windows this coming March 7, 2019, and the MacOS/Linux versions will be released shortly after the Windows version. This video game falls under the turn-based strategy and real-time tactics type which is very similar to the previous Total War games.
It is set in the Three Kingdoms period, and players control one of the eleven factions in the game. Each faction is ruled by a warlord, including Liu Bei, Sun Jian, and Cao Cao. In this installment, the players have mutual goals: to eliminate other factions, unify China, and ultimately become the nation’s ruler. This series features two modes: Romance and Classic.
Romance is based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms where generals are packed with superhuman strength. This novel is the cornerstone of Asian culture and perceived as one of China’s prominent classic novels. It is loosely based on the events that happened during the 14th century, and the political conflicts ensued in that period. Romance mode may be a romanticized version of history, but it is still based on actual incidents.
Classic, on the other hand, is based on the Records of the Three Kingdoms. In this mode, the generals no longer have powers and can no longer be commanded separately. When it comes to the story, classic mode is committed to achieve historical authenticity and emphasize the power struggle for military control in the ancient world.
Creative Assembly began the preproduction of Total War: Three Kingdoms in 2016 and later, during 2018, they released its cinematic trailer. The game was supposed to be released at the end of 2018, but due to the delays and additional development, Creative Assembly opted to release on March 2019. That's an ample time for them to complete the production of the game.
