Stellaris: Nomads is a major expansion for Stellaris that introduces a fundamentally new way to experience the galaxy: as a fully nomadic civilization that abandons traditional territory-based expansion in favor of constant movement across the stars.
In this DLC, your empire no longer relies on colonized planets or claimed systems as its foundation. Instead, your people live aboard massive, upgradeable Arkships, which function as mobile capitals combining the roles of colony, shipyard, and military flagship. These vessels become the core of your civilization, evolving through different classes and specializations as your journey unfolds.
To replace static borders, the expansion introduces the Wayline Network, a dynamic system of interstellar routes created by constructing Waystations throughout the galaxy. These routes allow your empire to harvest resources without direct territorial ownership, enabling a fluid, travel-driven economy that rewards strategic movement and logistical planning.
Diplomacy and interaction are also reworked through the Contract System, where settled empires assign nomadic factions a variety of missions—ranging from exploration and transport to specialized services—offering new avenues for influence, resources, and political leverage without conventional conquest.
The expansion also adds new narrative depth through multiple origins tailored to nomadic playstyles, including pilgrimage-driven societies, successor Khanates, and long-haul civilian cruise civilizations. Each origin reshapes how your Arkship society survives, evolves, and interacts with a galaxy that is often hostile to entities without borders.
The expansion also introduces a new "Defender of the Galaxy" endgame ambition, allowing nomadic empires to take on a heroic role in large-scale galactic crises, along with additional megastructures, events, and systems that expand late-game possibilities.
Stellaris: Nomads shifts the core identity of Stellaris away from territorial empire-building toward a logistics-heavy, movement-centric strategy experience where survival depends on mobility, adaptability, and the strategic use of space itself rather than its ownership.
