Moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons license, Pillars of Eternity focuses on the world of Eorea, a place where souls are the base of magic. In the nation of Dyrwood, there are infants who have recently started to be born without a soul. In Pillars of Eternity, you will play as a Watcher who is able to see past lives and interact with souls. You will have to discover what caused the awakening of your power and how to solve the problem with the "hollowborn" children.
As you progress through the story in Pillars of Eternity, you will recruit new companions that will be of great help in your travels. the game is played in real-time with an isometric view but it can be paused anytime to issue orders. There are quite a few classes available and you can take multiple roles in combat depending on the way you build your character. There are also abilities that can be used outside of combat, like stealth, acrobatics, mechanics, or lore. They will be put to test with ability checks that will determine if you succeed using them at a certain time and if you perform certain actions like picking locks, detecting traps, or climbing walls.
