Obsidian Introduces Turn-Based Combat to Pillars of Eternity
Over a decade after the original release of Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment has officially added a fully turn-based combat mode in a major 2026 update. This long-awaited feature allows players to experience the classic RPG in a new strategic light, giving them the option to shift away from the traditional real-time with pause system. The update is now available on PC through Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store, and the Xbox PC app.
A different way to play the game
The new turn-based mode gives players full control over combat pacing, with character actions determined by initiative rather than fixed rounds. Faster characters can act more frequently, while slower builds may miss turns, adding a layer of tactical depth. Traditional RPG elements like dexterity, armor weight, and speed effects now play a significant role in turn order, while actions such as weapon swaps, potion use, and free abilities have been rebalanced for smoother, more engaging combat.
Unlike the approach taken in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, this mode allows seamless switching between real-time and turn-based systems during an ongoing playthrough. Players can toggle modes through the options menu, keybindings, or an in-game HUD button, making it easy to experiment with different playstyles without restarting their campaign.
Community response to the update has been positive, with long-time fans praising the added flexibility and fresh tactical challenge. Many players appreciate the chance to revisit the original game with a strategic approach that rewards careful planning over fast reactions.
In addition to the turn-based system, the update brings quality-of-life improvements, including bug fixes, interface refinements, and menu enhancements. Obsidian has emphasized that future patches may further refine the feature based on player feedback, ensuring the mode evolves alongside the community's needs.
Overall, the introduction of the turn-based mode is a very good reason to discover or revisit this classic masterpiece, especially if you are a fan of classic RPG adventures. Remember that you can use our comparator to get a Pillars of Eternity PC key at the best price.
