Valheim Version 1.0 Officially Marks the End of Early Access

Valheim officially leaves Early Access with version 1.0
Updates & Patches

The day has finally come. More than five years after entering Early Access, Valheim has officially reached version 1.0, marking the biggest milestone yet in the development of the Norse mythology-inspired survival game. Deep North is now open as well, bringing a substantial amount of new content for Vikings who are still continuing their journey, while also giving those who left Valheim long ago a compelling reason to return.

After more than five years, it is time to return to Valheim

Looking back at 2021, even Iron Gate probably could not have predicted just how quickly Valheim would become one of the most memorable breakout hits in the survival genre. Developed by a very small team, the game exploded in popularity on Steam, eventually surpassing 12 million copies sold and reaching a peak of more than 500,000 concurrent players. It was an achievement big enough to push Valheim far beyond the usual scope of an indie project.

However, the journey from that initial success to a finished release took more than five years. During that time, Iron Gate gradually expanded the world through several major updates, with Mistlands and then Ashlands introducing new regions and challenges to the survival experience. Deep North now arrives as the final major piece of that journey, while also marking the moment Valheim officially leaves Early Access behind.

This frozen region is also the centerpiece of version 1.0. Players will face new creatures, locations, bosses and challenges, alongside several mechanics tied directly to the environment. Snow can now affect building, frozen bodies of water become part of exploration, while the Jotun invasion introduces another threat across the world. A grappling hook has also been added, giving players new ways to navigate terrain that were not possible before.

The scale of 1.0 also reaches into almost every familiar part of the game. Iron Gate has added more than 40 weapons, over 80 building pieces, more than 30 crafting materials and over 20 food items, alongside new armour sets, creatures, locations, events and achievements.

At the same time, many of the game’s underlying systems have also been improved. The save system has been reworked to improve performance and stability, world generation has received further optimization, player animations have been overhauled, and improvements to CPU performance, memory usage, textures and networking should help the game run better across a wider range of hardware. Inventory upgrades have also been introduced, showing that version 1.0 is not simply an update that adds Deep North, but a broader step toward completing Valheim after years of development.

For players who stepped away from the game several years ago, that may also be the biggest reason to return. The world they explored during the early days of Early Access now includes Mistlands, Ashlands and Deep North, together with a long list of new systems, items and mechanics added over more than five years. Coming back today could therefore feel very different from their original memories of Valheim.

For those who have heard about Valheim for years but never stepped into its world, the end of Early Access also creates a better starting point than ever. After more than five years, old Vikings finally have a reason to return, while new warriors can begin a survival journey of their own in a Valheim that is far more complete than it was when the adventure first began.
