FromSoftware explains the lack of a 2-player mode in Elden Ring Nightreign
The announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign during The Game Awards 2024 was followed by the reveal of additional information about the game. As a roguelike experience of sorts with procedurally generated content, the game offers endless possibilities for replayability which is something great, especially for a game that is mainly designed for three players in cooperative mode. As the developer studio revealed, Elden Ring Nightreign will also be playable solo without any concerns, but a surprising detail revealed about the game is that it will be all or nothing on that matter. There is no gameplay mode for two players. If you want to play alongside a friend, you will need to go through the game's matchmaking system for a third player to be added to your party. This is quite unusual, and FromSoftware has decided to explain the reasons behind such a choice.
Balancing gameplay is the key
In a recent interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki has explained that there are no technical limitations behind this decision but it's just a matter of balancing the game. The decision was made after extensive testing as the development of the game progressed.
"This was largely a game balancing decision, rather than a game design decision. So it came as development progressed. You know, we found that while we wanted each player to have that sense of accomplishment, that sense of rewarding co-op gameplay, this was like a sweet spot with three players in order for it not to feel too overwhelming or too busy. It allowed each player to go off on their own potentially and cover a bit of the map but also to you know that final experience coming together, that was three players felt like the sweet spot eventually."
Elden Ring Nightreign will be structured in a very particular way. The game requires players to survive for three days in hostile territory while exploring and battling enemies and facing a challenging boss at the end of each day. Not having an option for two players should not be a problem in any way though. The success of Elden Ring and its expansion Shadow of the Erdtree has made Nightreign incredibly popular even before it is released. This anticipates that the player base will be very large, therefore, there should be no problems finding a third player via matchmaking once the game is released.
As new information about Elden Ring Nightreign appears we will better understand some design decisions that may seem strange when first heard. As it is now, Elden Ring Nightreign promises to offer a significantly different experience that looks very interesting. As usual, we will keep you updated with any new information about the game.
