Elden Ring Nightreign could get two-player mode after launch
FromSoftware's upcoming game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is already shaping up to be a bold evolution of the acclaimed action-RPG formula. The game has not been released yet and the developer studio is already considering to improve and expand it with additional features after launch. Among them, a dedicated two-player mode could arrive as part of a future update.
Designed as a standalone experience set within the brutal and beautiful world of the Lands Between, Elden Ring Nightreign takes a different approach to cooperative play compared to its predecessor. The game reimagines the experience with a more seamless, story-integrated co-op mode for up to three players. Unlike the original's temporary alliances, the new system allows a trio of players to adventure together persistently, traversing the world, sharing progress, and tackling powerful bosses in unison. Encounters and world events have been redesigned around this three-player dynamic, encouraging tactical coordination and group synergy. FromSoftware has also designed the experience to scale down if you play solo, which is an option that even allows you to play the game offline.
A post-launch feature
This commitment to a trio-based structure appears to have left a gap: the absence of a tailored experience for two-player teams. Game director Junya Ishizaki has talked about this in a recent interview with IGN where he admitted that the studio just overlooked such a possibility.
"The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that. As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign."
"And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well."
This revelation has sparked excitement among fans who would love to journey through FromSoftware’s worlds with a single, consistent partner. While three-player co-op introduces new strategic depth, some players find the intimacy and focus of a two-person adventure more appealing and less chaotic.
For now, Elden Ring Nightreign is set to launch on May 30, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. With its darker tone, redesigned cooperative structure, and the promise of even more flexible multiplayer in the future, the game promises to offer a unique and immersive experience that will captivate the fans.
