Xbox Confirms Fable Delay, Targets February 2027 Release
Xbox has officially confirmed that Fable will no longer launch during its previously announced Autumn 2026 release window and has instead been pushed back to February 2027. The announcement was made by Matt Booty, Head of Xbox Game Studios Content & Studios, during a recent episode of the Official Xbox Podcast. The news marks a significant development for one of Xbox’s most highly anticipated projects and means fans will need to wait a few more months before returning to the world of Albion.
From dismissed rumors to an official confirmation that caught the community off guard
What makes this announcement particularly noteworthy is that, just over a month ago, rumors suggesting that Fable could be delayed had already begun circulating within the gaming community. At the time, Playground Games posted the message “Excited to welcome you back to Albion in Autumn 2026,” which many players interpreted as a clear indication that the original release plan remained intact. For that reason, Xbox’s confirmation that the game has indeed been moved to 2027 has understandably left many fans disappointed, as speculation that once seemed to have been put to rest has ultimately turned out to be true. However, unlike many other delays in the gaming industry, Xbox has given no indication that Fable is facing development troubles. On the contrary, Matt Booty stated that the game is in “great shape,” that the development team feels very positive about its current progress, and that everything is coming together according to plan.
According to Matt Booty, the decision to delay the release was not driven by quality concerns, technical issues, or a need for extended development time. Instead, Xbox wants to ensure that Fable has “a window all to its own” when it launches, rather than having to compete during what is shaping up to be an increasingly crowded holiday season in late 2026. That period is expected to feature major blockbuster releases such as Grand Theft Auto VI, the next Call of Duty, and several other AAA titles targeting the year-end shopping season. In an environment where competition for players’ attention is becoming more intense than ever, Xbox appears determined to give Fable its own spotlight rather than forcing the game to share the stage with some of the industry’s biggest names. This sends an important message: Xbox remains highly confident in the project and views Fable as a franchise worthy of taking center stage when the timing is right.
While waiting a few extra months will undoubtedly be disappointing for many fans, Xbox’s latest statement offers far more reassurance than cause for concern. Unlike delays that are often associated with development setbacks, Fable has been explicitly described by Xbox as being in excellent condition and progressing as expected. The move to February 2027 should therefore not be seen as a sign that the game is struggling, but rather as an effort to ensure that Albion’s long-awaited return arrives under the best possible circumstances. Given its status as one of Xbox’s most important RPG franchises, this additional wait may ultimately be worthwhile if it allows Fable to make its comeback in the strongest way possible before a global audience.
Fans may have to wait a little longer before embarking on their next adventure in Albion, but all signs from Xbox suggest that Fable remains firmly on track. In the meantime, be sure to follow the game’s official website so you do not miss any future updates or reveals from Playground Games.
