Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call Debuts After a Decade in Development
Some games are built by hundreds of developers with massive budgets behind them. Others are shaped by years of perseverance and passion from a small team determined to bring their vision to life. Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call belongs to the latter. First conceived in 2014 by Titan Roc, a seven-person indie studio that also self-published the project, the game has finally reached players after more than a decade of development.
When the spirit of old-school RPGs returns
Rather than casting players as a legendary chosen hero destined to save the world, Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call begins on a much humbler note. You step into the boots of a mercenary arriving in the land of Vahrin after it has been thrown into chaos by the attack of the colossal creature Khraiax. From there, the journey unfolds through exploration, meeting new characters, delving into dungeons, and gradually uncovering the many secrets hidden throughout this fantasy world.
What caught my attention the most, however, wasn't the story itself.
It was the feeling that Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call evokes. There's something surprisingly familiar about it. Not because it tries to imitate any legendary RPG, but because its world, sense of exploration, and character progression capture the spirit of the old-school RPGs that captivated so many players over the years. There's a hint of Gothic in its atmosphere, the freedom of character building brings The Elder Scrolls to mind, while its fantasy adventure carries shades of Fable and Kingdoms of Amalur. Everyone may see different inspirations in it, but for me, that sense of nostalgia is hard to ignore.
Perhaps that's why Titan Roc chose not to build the game around traditional character classes. Instead, Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call embraces a flexible classless RPG system that allows players to shape their own combat style. Melee weapons, magic, bows, alchemy, traps, and support abilities can all be combined into different character builds, rather than locking players into a single role from the very beginning.
The idea itself isn't entirely new for the RPG genre, but what stands out is Titan Roc's commitment to making that freedom the foundation of the entire experience.
Even the gameplay footage released so far reflects that design philosophy. Rather than relying solely on continuous attack combos, players are encouraged to prepare for combat in different ways. Summoning a dummy to draw enemy attention, placing explosive barrels before triggering them from a distance, or enchanting weapons with elemental effects before charging into battle all suggest a stronger emphasis on strategy than simply rushing headfirst into every fight. Combined with its semi-open world, dungeons, environmental puzzles, hidden treasures, and a wide range of character builds, Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call appears to offer plenty of room for players to experiment and forge their own path.
And perhaps that's exactly what so many fans still love about classic RPGs: the feeling of creating your own adventure instead of simply following one that has already been laid out for you.
Of course, ambition often comes with its own challenges. Early Steam reviews currently sit at "Mixed", reflecting a community that remains divided on the overall experience. While many players praise the game's RPG foundation, character-building freedom, and exploration-focused design, others feel that combat, animations, performance, and several gameplay systems still need more time to reach their full potential. Those concerns are understandable for an indie project of this scale, especially one that sets its sights so high.
Even so, the Mixed rating isn't what makes Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call most interesting.
More than a decade of development was Titan Roc's journey to bring its vision to life. But the moment the game reached players marked the beginning of a different journey altogether. From now on, the future of Vahrin will no longer be shaped solely by the seven people behind the studio, but also by the community stepping into its world.
Every compliment is a sign of recognition.
Every piece of feedback is another opportunity for the game to grow closer to what players hope it can become. At least for now, Titan Roc seems to understand that well. The studio has continued monitoring community feedback, engaging with players, and showing a genuine willingness to listen in the days following launch. No one can say for certain where Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call will be months or even years from now, but seeing the developers choose to grow alongside their community from day one is an encouraging sign for the future.
Perhaps that's why it's still too early to view Forsaken Realms: Vahrin's Call as a finished product after more than a decade of development. Instead, its release feels more like the beginning of its most important chapter. The past twelve years were spent building the world Titan Roc dreamed of creating. From this point forward, it will be the community that helps shape what that world ultimately becomes.
