Two new heroes join the fight in Darkest Dungeon

Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge is finally available
Updates & Patches

Just when Darkest Dungeon players thought the Hamlet had suffered enough, Red Hook Studios has opened the gates once again. Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge, a new premium DLC for Darkest Dungeon, brings two familiar faces from Darkest Dungeon II to the original nightmare factory: the Duelist and the Runaway. After years of stress, disease and questionable torch management, the Hamlet has apparently decided it needs even more problems.

Two new heroes reshape gameplay

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of The Fire's Edge is that neither character seems designed merely to fill a vacant role. Both introduce mechanics that encourage players to rethink how their entire party operates.

The Runaway potentially benefits from teams built around crowd control and enemy displacement, turning Stuns and positional attacks into setup tools for Burn. A party featuring the Occultist's ability to manipulate enemy ranks, for example, could create openings to exploit. Meanwhile, traditional damage-over-time compositions could gain another option for gradually dismantling tougher enemies.

The Duelist is more dependent on party choreography. Heroes that can protect her, manipulate positions or compensate when she moves through the formation could help her maintain momentum. Her Riposte also creates an interesting tension: should players deliberately expose her to attacks to capitalize on counterattacks, or use her defensive stance to reduce the risk?

And that is exactly where The Fire's Edge could become more than a nostalgia trip. The original Darkest Dungeon's combat system was already built around rank management, turn order and carefully constructed party synergies. The Duelist and Runaway effectively push those principles in new directions, offering new strategic options to the players.

The timing is remarkable. Darkest Dungeon is approaching its tenth anniversary, yet Red Hook is still finding ways to expand a game that many players had already considered complete. The Fire's Edge, therefore, feels less like a conventional expansion and more like a strange reunion between the two games in the series.

The sequel's heroes have come home, bringing fire and new combat techniques with them. Considering the philosophy of Darkest Dungeon, that might be the most appropriate anniversary present imaginable as you will need all the help you can find to fight the horrors in the Hamlet. Of course, you can also hire The Shieldbreaker and expand the game with The Crimson Court and The Color Of Madness, which you can purchase alongside The Fire's Edge at the cheapest price via our comparator.
