Modern Warfare 4 will debut on Nintendo Switch 2
Activision has finally lifted the curtain on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, confirming months of rumors and speculation surrounding the next entry in the long-running shooter franchise. The new installment is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and, for the first time in over a decade, Nintendo hardware through the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Reinventing the franchise
The reveal began with a mysterious teaser uploaded to YouTube, where Activision hinted at the return of the Modern Warfare series with cryptic imagery and distorted radio transmissions. Shortly afterward, the publisher officially introduced the game through its website and social media channels, presenting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as a major evolution for the franchise rather than a traditional sequel.
According to the first official details, the campaign will focus on a large-scale military conflict unfolding across the Korean Peninsula. Infinity Ward is reportedly aiming for a darker and more grounded tone, with players taking part in covert operations, urban warfare, and large cinematic battles involving Task Force 141 and returning franchise characters. The studio describes the game as one of the most ambitious stories the series has attempted in recent years.
Also on Switch 2
One of the most surprising announcements is the game’s release on Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the return of Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms for the first time since the Wii U era. Activision confirmed that the Switch 2 edition is being developed as a native version rather than a cloud-streamed release, suggesting the new Nintendo console will be capable of handling a full-scale current-generation Call of Duty experience.
The decision is also significant because it fulfills Microsoft's promise to bring the franchise back to Nintendo systems following the company's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. It's a major step in expanding the series beyond its traditional console audience.
Activision has also confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will abandon previous-generation hardware entirely. Unlike recent entries in the series, the game will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Infinity Ward says this allows the development team to focus fully on next-generation technology, including improved visuals, larger environments, more advanced AI systems, and expanded multiplayer features.
Although multiplayer gameplay has not yet been fully revealed, Activision has already teased the return of the popular DMZ extraction mode alongside new large-scale competitive experiences. Several leaks and insider reports also point toward revamped movement mechanics and deeper customization systems.
Players who pre-order the game will gain access to an upcoming beta test later this year. Activision has announced multiple editions of the game, including a premium Vault Edition featuring bonus operator skins, exclusive weapon blueprints, and additional digital content.
Interestingly, despite Microsoft now owning Activision Blizzard, the publisher confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one. The company has not explained the decision, though it has already sparked discussion among fans online.
With its return to modern military storytelling, a renewed focus on current-generation hardware, and its unexpected arrival on Nintendo Switch 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 could be one of the biggest game releases of 2026. However, the FPS panorama seems to have changed lately, as proven by the increasing popularity of extraction shooters like ARC Raiders or Marathon. It will be interesting to see if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is good enough to help the franchise reclaim its spot at the top of the genre.
