Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Gives Players Two Ways to Prestige

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 details its progression systems

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is changing how players approach Prestige, offering a choice between the traditional reset system and a more flexible alternative. In an official blog post published on October 19, Activision detailed the multiplayer ranks, Prestige milestones, weapon challenges, and DMZ rewards awaiting players at launch. The key difference is that players can now decide whether advancing to the next Prestige level is worth temporarily losing access to their unlocked equipment.

Classic Prestige vs. Regular Prestige: What's the difference?

After reaching Level 55, players can choose between two Prestige paths. Both restart their rank at Level 1, but Classic Prestige resets level-based unlocks, whereas Regular Prestige preserves them. The decision determines how much rebuilding players must do and which additional rewards they can earn.

Classic Prestige is designed for players who enjoy starting over. Weapons, equipment, perks, Killstreaks, and other level-based Create-a-Class unlocks must be earned again. In return, players receive a permanent 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token, and bonus cosmetic rewards. The token allows one eligible loadout item to remain unlocked through subsequent resets, making it possible to retain access to an essential piece of equipment.

Regular Prestige offers a less disruptive alternative. Players return to Level 1 but keep their existing level unlocks and Create-a-Class content, so they can continue using their preferred loadouts without repeating the unlock process. They still earn Prestige rewards, although Classic Prestige includes additional bonuses.

The choice is not permanent. Whenever players reach Level 55 again, they can select either path for their next Prestige. This means they can alternate between the two approaches depending on whether they value a fresh challenge or uninterrupted access to their equipment.

Prestige Master takes the challenge to Level 1,000

There are 10 standard Prestige levels to complete before players reach Prestige Master. From there, the level cap extends to 1,000, with rewards distributed throughout the climb. These include Operator skins, weapon blueprints, emblems, charms, stickers, and other cosmetic items.

Players can also unlock additional Prestige colors and legacy icons inspired by earlier Call of Duty games. Reaching Level 1,000 grants the title of Prestige Legend, providing a final milestone for those who want to complete the entire multiplayer track.

Weapons have a separate Prestige system

Individual weapons offer another long-term challenge for those that want to unlock everything. Using a weapon in Multiplayer or DMZ earns Weapon XP and unlocks attachments. Once it reaches its maximum level, players can optionally enter Weapon Prestige, resetting its level to 1 and relocking most attachments. The reset does not remove weapon cosmetics, including blueprints, camos, reticles, accessories, decals, and stickers. Apex Attachments and Weapon Blueprint Attachments also remain available, while shared attachments unlocked for other weapons are unaffected.

Reaching maximum weapon level again automatically unlocks Weapon Prestige Master. This time, the weapon retains its level and attachments, allowing players to continue earning rewards. These include the Pyroclast Scatter camo at Weapon Prestige Master Level 150 and Pyroclast Cascade at Level 250.

Camo challenges and DMZ offer more options

Weapon customization extends beyond Prestige. Military, Special, Completionist, and Mastery camo challenges give players additional objectives, with some requiring achievements across multiple weapon classes. Multiplayer and DMZ have their own Mastery camos, while Warzone's are scheduled to arrive with Season 1. Reticle challenges, Daily Challenges, and Calling Card sets provide further rewards for completing specific tasks.

DMZ also has its own 70-level track, separate from multiplayer's 55 initial levels. Completing Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Operations, and other activities unlocks mode-specific content, including gear, station upgrades, 3D Printer recipes, Operator skins, and Survival Kits. DMZ XP also contributes to multiplayer rank, but XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone does not advance DMZ levels.

A more flexible approach to Prestige

To sum up, the two Prestige paths are the main change in Modern Warfare 4's progression system. Classic Prestige rewards players willing to rebuild their loadouts with an XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token, and additional cosmetics. Regular Prestige keeps existing equipment available while still providing a reason to continue playing. Neither path prevents players from pursuing weapon challenges, camouflages, or DMZ rewards. Instead, the choice lets them decide how they want to approach multiplayer's longer-term challenges.
