Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ is more than just another extraction shooter
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will offer a variety of experiences, including multiplayer, campaign, and more, but the return of DMZ is probably the most interesting one. Activision has released a deep dive into the mode, revealing new details about the Hajin Exclusion Zone and the gameplay mechanics. DMZ will launch alongside Modern Warfare 4 on October 23 as a persistent, open-world combat experience. It's been described as "the definitive extraction shooter experience", where players will gather resources, complete missions, battle AI forces and rival Operators, and attempt to escape with their hard-earned loot.
Hajin Is the Heart of the DMZ Experience
The DMZ mode is set in Hajin, a large Exclusion Zone shaped by the events of Modern Warfare 4. The map combines North and South Korean environments and it includes locations ranging, ranging from military installations and rural farmland to urban districts and industrial facilities. Players will be able to explore the 14th Political Prison, Chang-san Air Base, Deadtown, Imjin Farmland, Cheongun Village, Mirae General Hospital, Haneul Nuclear Reactor, NuriGO Mall, The Grid, Songdo Wharf, and Wolves Stadium. Each area has its own Threat Level, giving players a reason to consider where they travel and how aggressively they approach their objectives.
The Threat system is particularly interesting because combat can escalate depending on how much noise players make. Each Point of Interest has a Threat Level ranging from Low to Extreme. Openly attacking enemies can trigger dangerous responses, while stealth, disengagement, and simply moving away from hostile forces can reduce the pressure. Sometimes the smartest move in DMZ will be knowing when not to start a firefight.
Three Ways to Deploy
DMZ offers three primary ways to enter Hajin:
-
Story Missions: Narrative objectives that can be selected and replayed for significant rewards.
-
Dynamic Operations: Objectives that can be tackled directly for DMZ Cash, XP, and Supply Drops that become increasingly valuable.
-
Free Roam: A mission-free option for players who simply want to explore, gather loot and create their own objectives.
This structure makes DMZ quite approachable, offering players a variety of options they can choose from at any given time, and not forcing them to follow the same path over and over.
The Forward Operating Base Is Your DMZ Home
A persistent Forward Operating Base, or FOB, acts as the central hub where players manage Operators, equipment, progression and resources. The FOB starts as a relatively basic facility but can be expanded by completing Operations. It can contain more than a dozen Stations, including an Operator management area, Stash and Loadout, Firing Range, DMZ Orders, Survival Kits, 3D Printer, Gunsmith, Vendor, Bounty Leaderboard, Boss Board, Dog Tag Case and DMZ Progression station. The 3D Printer is particularly important. Players can use resources gathered during deployments to craft equipment and upgrade FOB Stations. Meanwhile, the Gunsmith allows DMZ Cash to be spent on attachments for weapons or even to build weapons from scratch. Weapon Manuals found during deployments expand the selection of weapons available for construction.
Loot, Fight, Complete Objectives, Extract
Progression in DMZ revolves around three major activities: Looting, Combat and Objectives. Players can search containers, unlock special rooms using Keys, investigate underground entrances and complete Dynamic Operations for valuable Supply Drops. Meanwhile, DMZ Orders are mission directives introduce players to the mode's systems, advance the narrative and provide objectives that can improve the player's DMZ Level and Stash.
Combat is a source of XP and weapon progression. Eliminating rival Operators is more lucrative than killing standard AI enemies, but picking fights with human players is riskier.
The game features multiple tiers of North Korean soldiers, armored and gas-mask-equipped enemies, autonomous combat drones, quadruped K9 units, helicopter patrols and road convoys, alongside Lieutenants, Commanders and rival players. The Threat system ties these enemies together. The more aggressively players operate in an area, the more severe the response can become. If players reach the maximum Hostiles Kill Count, an enemy Hunt Squad can even be dispatched to pursue them, marking them for death.
A Living Battlefield With Land, Sea and Air Vehicles
Hajin features vehicles operating across land, water and air, with options including tactical SUVs, trucks, helicopters, boats and more. DMZ vehicles require fuel and repairs. Players can refuel and repair them at Gas Stations, while certain Operator Traits can improve their effectiveness. The vehicle roster includes the Dreadnought, Polaris Dagor A1, LTV, Cargo Truck, D50 Radar Flatbed, RHIB, Heli and several other vehicles. Automated trains and trams also operate across Hajin, providing additional transportation options without requiring players to drive them.
DMZ is the biggest change in Modern Warfare 4
The sheer amount of game systems in DMZ make it stand out as much more than a side activity. The mode is designed around player decisions rather than simply winning firefights, and that has the potential to make every game memorable. Activision will reveal more details about DMZ soon.
