Marathon is a next-generation sci-fi extraction shooter from Bungie, the studio behind Halo and Destiny. Set on the long-abandoned colony world of Tau Ceti IV, the game places players in the role of a Runner, a cybernetic mercenary engineered for survival in a hostile, high-risk environment where profit and persistence are everything.

Each match is a calculated gamble. Enter the surface alone or with a small crew to scavenge rare technology, weapons, and data while contending with enemy Runners, aggressive AI factions, and unpredictable environmental dangers. Combat is fast, precise, and unforgiving, emphasizing strong gunplay, tactical positioning, and smart resource management. Extract successfully to secure your loot and grow stronger; fail, and everything you carried is lost.

Tau Ceti IV is a living battlefield layered with mystery. As you explore abandoned research facilities, industrial ruins, and alien terrain, you will uncover fragments of a failed human expedition and the forces that still haunt the planet. Progression allows you to select and customize distinct Runner shells, modify weapons and implants, and develop builds that support different playstyles, ranging from stealth and mobility to direct confrontation.

Designed as a long-term, evolving experience, Marathon features cross-platform multiplayer, seasonal progression, and ongoing narrative and gameplay updates. Every run reshapes your future, and every encounter tests your resolve.

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Can I permanently lose weapons in Marathon, and if so, how does that affect the core gameplay loop?
Yes, weapons can be lost. Losing a powerful weapon necessitates adapting your combat strategy, encouraging resourcefulness, and emphasizing strategic retreat and encounter management until a replacement is found. This creates tension and value in every weapon pick-up.
How does the 'oxygen' mechanic influence the exploration of alien environments?
Oxygen limits the time spent in hazardous areas, forcing players to carefully plan routes and prioritize objectives. This adds a layer of survival and puzzle-solving to the exploration, as players must identify safe zones and efficiently manage their dwindling air supply.
Explain the significance of the 'Shields' system in terms of combat tactics and risk assessment.
Shields absorb damage, but can overload. This encourages aggressive plays by rewarding the use of shields and makes the player adapt their combat behavior accordingly. Carefully managing shield levels becomes crucial for survival, forcing players to make split-second decisions about when to engage, retreat, or conserve their defenses.
How does the 'terminal' system contribute to narrative and puzzle-solving compared to other first-person shooters?
Terminals are the primary interface for receiving mission objectives, uncovering story details, and solving environmental puzzles. This system emphasizes reading and information gathering, rewarding players who pay attention to the lore and context rather than just relying on direct combat skills. It fosters a different kind of engagement.
What is the role of the 'Motion Sensor' in tactical gameplay, and how does it change the approach to combat?
The Motion Sensor provides information on the location of enemies, even through walls. This allows the players to employ pre-emptive strikes, plan ambushes, or avoid encounters entirely. The motion sensor adds a strategic layer to combat and encourages a methodical approach.
Describe the impact of 'Fusion Pistols' on the combat's pacing and enemy encounters.
Fusion Pistols are designed to inflict significant damage, thus changing the combat's pace. The game encourages the use of these weapons strategically, thus requiring the player to use their limited ammunition carefully.
How do the different alien races and their behaviors affect the core combat gameplay?
Each alien race has unique attack patterns, strengths, and weaknesses, forcing the player to adapt their tactics. For example, some races might swarm, while others use ranged attacks. This variety keeps the combat fresh and requires players to learn enemy behaviors to survive.
What is the central role of 'healing items' in the game, and how does the game prevent players from being overpowered by health?
Healing items are finite and can be strategically used to recover health. The finite nature of the healing items compels the player to prioritize risk management, strategic retreat, and efficient combat. The game may have health decay or other mechanics to prevent excessive health.
Explain the significance of 'environmental hazards' beyond basic damage, and their impact on player strategy.
Environmental hazards like radiation or toxic gas force players to consider their surroundings and seek out safe routes. This adds a layer of environmental awareness to the gameplay, rewarding players who pay attention to their environment and penalizing those who rush blindly into danger.
In what ways do the 'level designs' encourage exploration and reward curiosity?
Level designs are not linear, encouraging exploration, and providing secrets. The game design gives players multiple routes and hidden areas, rewarding curiosity with resources, weapons, or story details. This design makes the players feel like they are exploring, not just advancing through a level.

Not gonna lie, I was expecting something more unique besides the art direction. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game. The gameplay is solid, which, coming from Bungie, is a given, but it's missing something to push it past its competitors. Maybe when the new map becomes available and the aliens show up we'll get a notion of what the game can truly offer.

Marathon is a multiplayer PvP shooter with extraction shooter mechanics and a sci-fi Marathon. Playing as cybernetic mercenaries called "runners," players must face the dangers of evolving environments, alone or in collaboration with others, where each match aims to offer a different experience. The game is set on the inhospitable planet Tau Ceti IV, a colony once inhabited by 300,000 people who mysteriously disappeared, and which appears to hide precious artifacts and treasures. Despite being set in the universe of the original trilogy released on Mac OS in the 1990s, Bungie has confirmed that the title is neither a remake nor a direct sequel. Therefore, it is not necessary to have played the previous games to understand the lore and gameplay of Marathon.

This new game from Bungie is really fun... you meet PvE and also PvP people. This game is about searching and looting the colourful planet. Well I wont say more but the game is well optimized and will run really good in most machines. Last thing I will say is .... buy it or try the Demo before and see if you like it... ;) I did and hope you so.

Marathon looks like an interesting addition to the extraction shooter genre. Bungie usually delivers solid gunplay, so I’m curious to see how the PvPvE gameplay and long-term seasonal updates will evolve after launch.

After playing Marathon, I have a quite divided opinion. The gameplay is rather successful and I don’t find the game particularly frustrating. The extraction system works well and the games can be quite intense, especially when several teams cross paths. The shooting sensations are solid and the matches remain dynamic. On the other hand, what I liked much less was the artistic direction. The very bright colors and visual style did not really convince me. Personally, I prefer science fiction universes that are a bit more immersive or realistic, and here I had trouble catching up with the general atmosphere of the game. In the end, Marathon remains a game with a solid foundation and pleasant gameplay, but the artistic direction really prevents me from diving into it completely. With time and updates, my opinion might perhaps evolve

Marathon delivers a fast-paced, atmospheric experience that blends classic Bungie DNA with modern design. The worldbuilding is fascinating, and the gunplay feels incredibly smooth. A solid foundation that will only get better with future updates

Marathon marks a major shift for the classic franchise, reimagining it as a modern extraction shooter rather than a traditional single-player sci-fi shooter like the original games. Developed by Bungie, the game focuses on tense PvPvE gameplay where players, known as Runners, explore dangerous zones, collect valuable loot, and attempt to extract before other teams eliminate them. Early impressions highlight the strong gunplay—something Bungie is well known for from titles like Destiny 2—along with a striking sci-fi art style and mysterious narrative elements tied to the series’ lore. However, the shift to an extraction-based multiplayer format has divided fans, with some praising the competitive tension and replayability while others miss the story-driven single-player experience of the original Marathon games. Overall, Marathon looks like a bold but risky reinvention that could stand out in the crowded multiplayer shooter market if its gameplay loop proves deep and rewarding.
