Blizzard boasts impressive earnings with Diablo IV microtransactions
There is nothing new in video game developers and publishers earning a lot of money by selling digital items and services via an in-game shop. The microtransaction model is widely extended and it has proven to be more profitable and compatible with other types of monetization options, like, for example, subscription services on classic MMORPGs. However, some big numbers can still raise some eyebrows, especially when talking about important franchises like Diablo.
The latest installment in the popular ARPG series from Activision Blizzard continues to be one of the most popular in the genre, despite having received many critics and being in a partial process of restructuring many of the game mechanics. The recent patches have left the game in a much better state, especially with the release of Season 5: Infernal Hordes. However, the upcoming launch of the Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred expansion next month promises to be a totally revulsive one that will arrive accompanied by a new season.
So much money
It's not like Diablo IV can't be considered a huge success. Even if the game could have done it better in terms of sales, it's still quite profitable for Activision Blizzard. Thanks to the LinkedIn profile of the Senior Product Manager of Diablo IV Harrison Froeschke, we know that the game has generated significant revenue for the company. With more than a billion dollars in revenue since the game was released and over 150 million dollars coming from microtransactions, Diablo IV is a true gold mine. Of course, there are other games that generate more, but these numbers prove that the series continues to be a pillar of the company, even though it may not be in its best moments.
These numbers will grow a lot when Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred is released on October 8. The introduction of a new class, mercenaries, and other gameplay novelties alongside a new chapter in the story will bring back many players into the game. Therefore, it looks safe to say that we will have Diablo series for a long while, even if the next game takes years to arrive. If you are not that patient and want to travel to Sanctuary to fight against Lilith and her demonic forces, feel free to use our comparator to get a cheap Diablo IV CD key or pre-order the Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred expansion at the best price.
