Diablo 4’s Battle Pass Overhaul: A new era of player choice in Season 8
Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled a transformative rework for Diablo 4’s Battle Pass system, launching with Season 8, titled Belial’s Return, on April 29, 2025. This overhaul replaces the traditional linear Battle Pass with a dynamic new system called “The Reliquary,” designed to address player feedback and align with the game’s core philosophy of agency and customization. The update promises to make rewards more meaningful and engaging, marking a significant shift for the live-service ARPG.
Here's a deep dive into the Battle Pass
The Reliquary system introduces four distinct reward categories: a free seasonal Reliquary, Belial’s Return, and three premium Reliquaries—Weapons (200 Platinum), Beasts (500 Platinum), and Armor (800 Platinum). Players can purchase these individually or opt for a 1,000 Platinum bundle, matching the cost of previous Battle Passes while offering greater flexibility. Unlike the old 90-tier grind, which often included unwanted rewards, players now use Favor Tokens—earned through killing monsters and completing quests—to unlock cosmetics in any order within each Reliquary. This non-linear approach ensures players prioritize items they value, such as the Guise of the Deceiver armor set, a bonus for completing premium Reliquaries.
Blizzard’s motivation stems from player critiques that the original Battle Pass felt “antiquated” and had limited player choice. The Reliquary system tackles these by decoupling rewards from rigid progression and integrating Smoldering Ashes and Season Blessings into the revamped Season Journey, which now features aspirational challenges like defeating endgame bosses with specific seasonal powers.
Season 8 also introduces Event Reliquaries, tied to limited-time events like the Berserk crossover in May, offering unique cosmetics. While pricing for these remains unclear, the system’s flexibility has sparked cautious optimism among fans, as seen in posts on social media praising the Call of Duty-inspired approach. However, concerns linger about Platinum costs and the 99-token cap on Favor.
By prioritizing player choice and meaningful rewards, Blizzard aims to make Diablo 4’s Battle Pass a model for live-service games. As Season 8 unfolds, the community’s reception will determine if this bold rework becomes a permanent fixture in Sanctuary. Check out the best prices for Diablo 4 using our price comparison tool.
