After years of hunting, Diablo 4’s cow level is real
After years of jokes, clues, fake-outs, datamines, and players murdering far too many innocent cows, Diablo 4’s Secret Cow Level has finally been found in the new Lord of Hatred expansion. For a long time, this felt like one of those classic Blizzard teases that might never fully pay off. The old “there is no cow level” joke has been part of Diablo history for decades, but Diablo 4 players clearly refused to let it die.
This has been years in the making. Since Diablo 4 launched, the community has been digging through strange items, hidden relics, odd cow spawns, and suspicious messages trying to work out whether Blizzard had actually buried a real cow level somewhere in Sanctuary. Early steps had players killing hundreds of cows to collect items like the Bloody Wooden Shard, Intricate Metallic Fragment, and Musty Tome, then using them to unlock the Forlorn Hovel and obtain the weird Stamina Potion. For a while, that looked like the end of the joke, but it turns out it was only one piece of a much bigger puzzle.
How players finally opened the way to the cow level
With Lord of Hatred, the hunt finally moved forward. Players found new steps tied to hidden questlines, strange relics, the Horadric Cube, and a cow island that basically screamed: “You are not done yet.” The full route appears to require progress through multiple secret chains from the base game and later expansions, with items being gathered, combined, and used to open the way forward. Once players reach the hidden cow area, the level itself works like a proper Diablo throwback: hostile cow enemies, a ridiculous setup, and eventually the return of the Cow King.
The big reward is the Cow King’s Crown, which is exactly as stupid as it should be. It is a Mythic Unique helm with intentionally absurd cow-themed effects, including joke stats tied to different days of the week. It is less about pure power and more about owning one of the strangest trophies Diablo 4 has ever added. And honestly, that feels right. A secret cow reward should not be boring, clean, or normal. It should make you laugh the second you read it.
Not everyone is fully happy with the level itself, with some players saying Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 did the cow joke better. But even then, the discovery is still a cool moment for Diablo 4. The community spent years chasing this thing, and Blizzard finally gave them something real to find.
