The reason why Baldur’s Gate 3 didn't get any DLC
When a game becomes as popular and successful as Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s natural for fans to start asking for DLC—extensions that let them re-experience their journeys and dive even deeper into the world they love. While Larian Studios has continued to support the game through regular updates—sometimes with major additions like new subclasses, expanded character customization, and more—studio director Swen Vincke has made it clear: Larian is ready to move on.
The latest Patch 8 update has brought many players back to the game, earning high praise for its fresh content. Yet, despite the excitement around new features, the longing for a full DLC expansion remains strong among fans. When asked once again about the possibility, Vincke gave a surprisingly candid response.
Making DLC Is Boring
In a new interview with Gamespot, the topic of DLC resurfaced. When asked why Larian refuses to develop DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3, despite its massive success, Vincke replied:
"It's boring, is really the honest answer. We tried to be in the DLC business, talked about that with Baldur’s Gate 3.. there's just no passion... I mean, happy player, happy business, but you also need a happy developer for a happy player. What we're doing now makes developers way more happy."
Initially, after witnessing the incredible success of Baldur’s Gate 3, the team did consider creating DLC:
"You've got a huge game, a huge hit, and you've gotta make DLC this and DLC that and DLC there... and money's gonna pile up all high!"
However, after serious reflection, Larian realized it would be better to move forward with brand-new projects rather than stay locked into the world of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Regardless of how fans feel about the lack of DLC, it's hard not to respect Larian Studios’ decision. While DLC can be both profitable and enjoyable for players, forcing developers to create content they aren’t passionate about often leads to soulless, uninspired cash grabs. Larian has bigger goals now—new, ambitious projects that they’re genuinely excited about. The studio is charging full steam ahead into the future. Although details about their next games remain under wraps, Vincke assures us that something truly special is on the horizon.
