Nobody wants the challenge of making a sequel to Baldur's Gate 3
Hasbro, the parent company overseeing the Dungeons & Dragons video game rights, reportedly explored multiple paths for continuing the Baldur's Gate franchise after the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3—but at least one of those efforts hit a clear dead end.
Another dead end
According to an interview with PC Gamer, Hasbro approached James Ohlen, co-lead designer on Baldur's Gate 2 and now head of Archetype Entertainment, with a proposal to develop Baldur's Gate 4. Ohlen confirmed that he was directly asked whether he would be interested in returning to the series under Hasbro’s direction.
His answer was a firm refusal.
Ohlen explained that, while the idea of revisiting the franchise was tempting on paper, the practical reality made it unworkable. He argued that any new entry would inevitably be measured against Baldur’s Gate 3, the Larian Studios title that became one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs of its generation and a commercial hit selling tens of millions of copies.
"Having to compete against Baldur’s Gate 3? That would be insanity," Ohlen said, emphasizing that the scope of the challenge—both creatively and technically—would require years of foundational engine and systems work just to reach parity.
He also noted that he was already heavily committed to Exodus, the sci-fi RPG project in development at Archetype Entertainment, making a return to Faerûn even less feasible. In his view, attempting to build a successor under those conditions would risk an uneven result and potentially damage the legacy of the series.
Hasbro, for its part, has indicated that it is actively exploring partnerships for the future of the franchise following Larian Studios' decision to step away from Baldur's Gate. The company has publicly stated it is speaking with multiple developers to determine the right direction for what comes next.
Larian itself has repeatedly confirmed it will not be developing Baldur's Gate 4, instead choosing to move on to new original projects after completing its work on Baldur's Gate 3 with no plans for any DLC.
For now, the future of the series remains open-ended—defined as much by hesitation from potential developers as by Hasbro's search for a studio willing to take on one of modern gaming's most demanding inheritances. In any case, if you don't know what's the hassle of a possible sequel, you definitely need to visit our comparator to purchase Baldur's Gate III at the cheapest price.
