The Blood of Dawnwalker confirms 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox
Rebel Wolves has wasted little time responding to criticism surrounding the console performance of The Blood of Dawnwalker. After the studio revealed that its upcoming dark fantasy RPG would initially offer 30 FPS and 40 FPS modes on consoles, it has now confirmed that a dedicated Performance Mode targeting 60 FPS will be available from day one.
A controversy about the game's performance on consoles
The controversy began last week when Rebel Wolves released the first substantial console gameplay footage for The Blood of Dawnwalker. The video, which isn't available anymore, showcased the game running on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X, but the accompanying performance details revealed only two options: a Quality Mode targeting 30 FPS and a Balanced Mode targeting 40 FPS. That immediately raised eyebrows among console players. With 60 FPS becoming an increasingly common target for demanding games on PS5 and Xbox Series X, many expected The Blood of Dawnwalker to offer a performance-focused mode, particularly given that even the more powerful PS5 Pro was initially presented without one.
The reaction was strong enough that Rebel Wolves has now accelerated its plans. The developer explained that the 60 FPS Performance Mode was actually already in development, but it was still undergoing testing and the studio did not want to promise something it could not confidently guarantee for launch. That has changed following another round of testing. Rebel Wolves says it has now gathered enough results to confirm that the Performance Mode will be ready for launch day. As a result, PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X will offer three graphical options when The Blood of Dawnwalker launches.
The Performance Mode will target 60 FPS, while Balanced Mode will target 40 FPS and Quality Mode will target 30 FPS. PS5 Pro will also benefit from additional overall visual enhancements, although Rebel Wolves has yet to provide a detailed breakdown of exactly what those improvements will entail. Xbox Series S is the outlier. The less powerful Microsoft console will target 30 FPS, with no 40 FPS or 60 FPS mode announced for the system.
It is also worth stressing that Rebel Wolves describes the new option as targeting 60 FPS. That does not necessarily mean a completely locked 60 FPS under every circumstance, so players will have to wait until launch to see how consistently the mode maintains its target during the game's most demanding sequences.
A surprisingly quick turnaround
The situation is an interesting example of how quickly player feedback can influence a game's launch plans. Just days after the initial console performance announcement, Rebel Wolves has gone from not being ready to promise 60 FPS to confirming the feature for the first day. For players who were disappointed by the original 40 FPS ceiling, this is obviously much better news. A 40 FPS mode can provide a useful middle ground between image quality and responsiveness, but for an action-heavy RPG, 60 FPS remains the preferred choice for many console players.
The release of The Blood of Dawnwalker is scheduled for September 3, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The 60 FPS Performance Mode will be ready for launch day and you can always find the best deals for The Blood of Dawnwalker with our comparator if you want to save money.
