Bungie says no second chances for cheaters in Marathon
Online multiplayer games live and die by trust. The moment players feel like matches are unfair, the fun starts to fade. Cheating has been one of the biggest problems in online shooters for years. From aimbots to wallhacks and exploit abuse, it only takes a small group of bad actors to ruin the experience for everyone else. We’ve seen it happen time and time again.
One recent example is ARC Raiders. During early testing phases, reports of cheating started popping up across the community. When players feel like they’re constantly losing to someone using hacks, they stop logging in. Even a strong concept and solid gameplay can struggle if anti-cheat systems don’t keep up. It’s a tough lesson that many studios have had to learn the hard way.
Bungie draws the line: No second chances for cheaters
With Marathon, Bungie is making it clear that they don’t want to repeat that story. Ahead of launch, the developers have taken a firm stance: zero tolerance for cheating. According to Bungie, anyone caught cheating — or even creating cheats — will be permanently banned. No temporary suspensions. No second chances. If you break the rules, you’re out for good. That message has been repeated directly by the dev team, and they’ve made it clear they’re serious about protecting the game’s long-term health.
Bungie is also backing up those words with real systems. Marathon will use fully authoritative dedicated servers, meaning the server controls movement, shooting, and inventory actions. That helps prevent common hacks like teleporting or unlimited ammo. The game also uses a “Fog of War” system that limits the information sent to players, which can reduce the effectiveness of wallhacks and ESP tools. On top of that, Bungie is working with BattlEye and has added extra security layers and backend data tracking to spot suspicious behavior.
At the end of the day, players just want fair matches. If Bungie delivers on this promise, Marathon could launch with a strong, competitive foundation. If you’re planning to jump in, make sure you don’t overpay — use our price comparison tool to find the best deals on Marathon before release.
