Bungie Outlines Post-Test Changes for Marathon

Bungie will use player feedback to improve Marathon

Following the conclusion recent Server Slam test of Marathon, Bungie has publicly addressed community feedback and detailed how player input will influence the ongoing development of its upcoming extraction shooter. The large-scale playtest was designed not only to stress servers ahead of launch, but also to evaluate core systems, gunplay balance, and usability under real-world conditions.

The studio opens the door to improvements

In a series of recap messages shared after the event, Bungie thanked participants and confirmed that the team has been actively cataloguing player impressions. Developers described the test as a learning opportunity, emphasizing that community observations, ranging from technical performance to moment-to-moment combat clarity, are being reviewed internally. The studio signaled that refinement will continue both before release and in post-launch updates.

One of the most prominent areas of criticism involved the game's user interface. Those who tested Marathon reported that the HUD and menu systems could feel cluttered during firefights, occasionally obscuring critical information such as pings, equipment status, or environmental threats. Bungie acknowledged these concerns directly, stating that improving readability and reducing visual noise is now a priority. Planned adjustments include clearer mid-combat information display, streamlined navigation, and better visual hierarchy within menus and inventory screens.

Matchmaking structure was another recurring topic. Currently built around solo and three-player squad queues, Marathon does not feature a dedicated two-player playlist. Many players argued that a duos option would create a more balanced and accessible experience for smaller groups. Bungie confirmed that a dedicated duos mode is under consideration, though no formal commitment or timeline has been announced.

Combat pacing also generated debate. Some participants expressed concerns about time-to-kill (TTK), suggesting that certain engagements resolve too quickly, limiting tactical counterplay. Bungie indicated it is analyzing encounter data, including player density across maps and weapon performance metrics, to determine whether adjustments are necessary. Any changes to TTK would likely be part of broader balance tuning rather than isolated tweaks.

On the technical side, PC performance feedback played a significant role in post-test discussions. Players reported high CPU usage, inconsistent frame rates, and occasional stuttering during intense encounters. Bungie has encouraged affected users to submit diagnostic information to support channels, noting that optimization work is ongoing. The studio reiterated that large-scale tests are specifically intended to surface these types of issues prior to full release.

Additional suggestions touched on quality-of-life features such as keybinding flexibility, loot management flow, and general usability improvements. While Bungie has not detailed which of these proposals will be implemented immediately, it confirmed that the feedback has been forwarded to relevant development teams for evaluation.

Overall, Bungie's response suggests that Marathon remains in a phase where player input plays a significant role in shaping its final form. By directly acknowledging players' concerns, the studio appears intent on refining the experience in collaboration with its community rather than treating the Server Slam as a closed beta checkpoint. In just a couple of days we may see the real impact of the possible changes as the release of the game is scehduled for March 5. It's great to see Bungie actively listening to player feedback during the development of Marathon. Community input can make a huge difference, especially for competitive multiplayer games. Hopefully these improvements will make the experience smoother and more balanced at launch.

I would like to see the game evolve in several directions. First, I hope that the developers will continue to improve the gameplay and balancing, even if I don’t find it bad, so that the games remain dynamic and interesting in the long term. Then, I would really like the artistic direction to be reworked or for there to be options to make the universe more immersive. Maybe more realistic skins, filters or themes could help to better appreciate the game environment. Finally, new content such as maps, game modes or regular events could make Marathon more varied and captivating. With these improvements, the game could become really interesting, even for those who, like me, have not attached to the visual aspect

The post-test updates have greatly improved balance and performance. Weapons feel more distinct, abilities are better tuned, and stability issues have largely vanished. It’s reassuring to see Bungie reacting so quickly to player feedback

The recent Server Slam for Marathon gave players an early taste of Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, and the studio’s follow-up comments show that the test served its purpose. Many participants highlighted issues with the game’s interface and overall clarity during intense firefights, while others discussed matchmaking limitations and performance problems on PC. Bungie appears to be taking these concerns seriously, noting that adjustments to the UI, gameplay balance, and optimization are already being reviewed. The possibility of new playlist options like duos also indicates that the developers are still experimenting with how players interact with the game’s systems. If Bungie continues refining the experience based on community feedback, Marathon could launch as a much more polished and balanced shooter than what players saw during the test.
