The Switch 2 version of Dragon's Dogma 2 is surprising

Dragon's Dogma 2 finds new life on Switch 2

Capcom might have accidentally discovered one of Dragon's Dogma 2's biggest monsters hiding in the most unexpected place: a handheld console. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version of the action RPG is reportedly running so well that it has actually surpassed the development team's expectations, turning what could have been a technical headache into a surprisingly promising port.

When Dragon's Dogma 2 launched, players quickly fell in love with its chaotic battles, unpredictable Pawn companions, and wonderfully strange open world. However, the game's ambition came with a price. The RE Engine-powered adventure pushed hardware hard, especially in crowded cities where hundreds of NPCs and complex simulations could bring performance to its knees.

That made the idea of bringing the game to Nintendo's new hardware seem like a particularly brave quest — the kind where you enter a cave knowing there is probably a dragon waiting inside.

The effort is paying off

According to producer Naoto Oyama, however, the Switch 2 version has been performing better than Capcom initially anticipated. The effort made to accomodate the game to the capabilities of Nintendo's console has resulted in optimal improvements. The team has been pleasantly surprised by how the game handles on Nintendo's upcoming console, suggesting that the hardware is proving more capable than expected when dealing with Dragon's Dogma 2's demanding world.

The good news may not be limited to Switch 2 owners. While Capcom has not confirmed specific performance updates for other platforms, the optimization work required to make the game run efficiently on new hardware could potentially benefit the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC versions as well.

Game development is often a domino effect: improvements made while squeezing extra power from one platform can sometimes make their way into the wider game. If Capcom manages to streamline Dragon's Dogma 2's systems during this process, current players could receive a smoother experience before the game's next major adventure arrives.

And that adventure is shaping up to be a rather enormous one.

Dark Arisen is big

Capcom has also revealed more details about Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, the upcoming expansion inspired by the beloved original game's enhanced edition. Rather than offering a handful of extra quests and calling it a day, the developer says the DLC will include more than 25 hours of additional content. That is a sizeable chunk of new adventures, especially for a game already filled with massive creatures, dangerous journeys, and the kind of moments where your carefully planned expedition suddenly turns into four warriors running away from a giant monster while someone screams about their inventory being full.

Dark Arisen is expected to expand the Dragon's Dogma 2 experience with new areas to explore, new challenges to overcome, and additional content designed to keep players experimenting with different vocations and party setups. Capcom appears to be treating the expansion as a major extension of the game's world rather than a simple afterthought.

With Switch 2 performance exceeding expectations and a 25-plus-hour expansion on the horizon, Dragon's Dogma 2 could be entering a second life. The game's launch may have been a little rough around the edges, but Capcom's ongoing work suggests that the Arisen's journey is far from finished, and this time, the adventure might run a little smoother.
