Call of Duty’s Switch 2 release may be closer than expected
Call of Duty may finally be marching onto Nintendo’s platform after more than a decade away. A new report suggests the first Switch version is nearly finished and gearing up for release within the next few months, marking a major milestone in Microsoft’s commitment to bring the blockbuster franchise to Nintendo players.
A Long-Awaited Return to Nintendo Hardware
Windows Central reporter Jez Corden shared on social media platform X that the inaugural Call of Duty Switch version is approaching completion. While he didn’t specify the exact title, he emphasized that the game is “hitting milestones” and remains on track for a 2026 launch window. For fans who have been waiting since the Wii U era, confirmation that development is well underway is reason enough to get excited.
Microsoft first pledged to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms back in 2023 as part of its 10-year agreement during the Activision Blizzard acquisition. That commitment included releasing future entries on Nintendo systems the same day as Xbox, with full feature and content parity. At the time, industry watchers were skeptical, citing the original Switch’s hardware limitations.
However, with the more powerful Switch 2 now in the picture, that calculus has changed significantly. Phil Spencer previously acknowledged that getting Call of Duty running on the original Switch required “definite work,” but next-generation hardware opens the door to far more ambitious ports.
What remains unclear is which Call of Duty entry will debut first. Possibilities range from Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 to a custom build of Warzone, which could rapidly grow the platform’s online player base. Recent hiring at Sledgehammer Games has emphasized experience with mobile and Switch development, adding fuel to speculation that a flexible, scalable title may be in development.
The upcoming Xbox Developer Direct in January 2026 is a likely venue for an official reveal, though nothing has been confirmed. If announced, it would mark the franchise’s first appearance on a Nintendo system since Call of Duty: Ghosts launched on the Wii U in 2013.
Recently, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 received a new Season 1 update aimed at improving several aspects of the game. Despite being frowned upon by many at launch, the title has already begun to recover, addressing multiple early criticisms.
