AMD delivers FSR 4.1.1 and upgraded Ray Regeneration in new SDK 2.3
AMD has released version 2.3 of its FSR SDK, giving developers access to the latest iterations of its upscaling and ray-tracing technologies, including FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 and FSR Ray Regeneration 1.2. The updated SDK allows developers to integrate AMD’s newest FSR features directly into their games rather than relying on the company’s driver-level “FSR Upgrade” functionality. This should make implementation more seamless while enabling studios to take fuller advantage of AMD’s latest FSR Redstone technologies.
One of the most notable additions is support for FSR Upscaling 4.1.1. This version brings FSR 4’s machine learning-based upscaling technology to Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards based on the RDNA 3 architecture. Previously, FSR 4 features were limited to AMD’s newer RDNA 4 GPUs, making this the first release to expand support beyond the Radeon RX 9000 series.
AMD has also confirmed that future updates will further broaden compatibility. The company plans to introduce lighter FSR 4 models designed for RDNA 3 and RDNA 3.5 hardware, while support for older RDNA 2 GPUs is also expected down the line.
Another major highlight of the SDK is FSR Ray Regeneration 1.2. AMD’s AI-powered ray-tracing enhancement technology serves as the company’s alternative to Nvidia’s DLSS Ray Reconstruction, using machine learning to improve the quality of ray-traced lighting by reducing noise and enhancing visual clarity.
Although still supported by only a small number of games, including titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Crimson Desert, Ray Regeneration has already shown noticeable improvements over traditional denoising methods. However, it still trails Nvidia’s DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction in overall image quality and recovered detail.
With version 1.2, AMD says it has delivered further image quality improvements while adding optional ambient and specular occlusion denoising features. The update also introduces significant API changes, including several breaking modifications that developers will need to account for when integrating the technology.
Overall, FSR SDK 2.3 represents a meaningful step forward for AMD’s graphics ecosystem. Expanded FSR 4 support on RDNA 3 hardware should bring machine learning upscaling to a much larger audience, while the latest Ray Regeneration update could encourage wider adoption of AMD’s AI-powered ray-tracing enhancements in future games.
