Subnautica 2 sets Early Access launch for May 14
After months of controversy, legal disputes, and uncertainty surrounding its development, Subnautica 2 finally has an official Early Access release date. We already knoew that the game would become available next month, but now Unknown Worlds Entertainment confirmed that the long-awaited sequel to the beloved underwater survival series will launch on May 14, 2026, for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
It's finally happening
The announcement marks a major turning point for a project that, over the past year, became overshadowed by tensions between the studio and publisher Krafton. What began as concerns over development progress quickly escalated into one of the gaming industry's most public publisher-versus-developer conflicts in recent years.
Originally expected to debut in 2025, the game's release plans were disrupted after Krafton removed several key figures from Unknown Worlds, including studio founders Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, as well as CEO Ted Gill. Krafton defended the decision by claiming the sequel required additional development time and that releasing it too early could negatively affect the quality of the final product and the reputation of the franchise.
Former studio leadership strongly pushed back against those claims. According to reports that surfaced during the dispute, the developers believed Subnautica 2 was already in a suitable state for Early Access. They also accused Krafton of intentionally delaying the release window in order to avoid a substantial financial bonus agreement reportedly tied to the game launching before the end of 2025.
The situation intensified further when legal proceedings entered the picture. Earlier this year, a Delaware court ruled that Ted Gill had been improperly removed from his position, reinstating him as CEO of Unknown Worlds. The ruling added another layer to the increasingly complicated relationship between the developer and its parent company, while also extending deadlines connected to the disputed performance agreement.
Throughout the controversy, the gaming community closely followed every development. Many fans criticized Krafton’s handling of the situation, expressing concern about the future of the franchise and the treatment of the original creators behind the series. The backlash grew strong enough that some players openly discussed boycotting the game or leaving negative reviews in protest once it launched.
Despite the behind-the-scenes turmoil, development on Subnautica 2 continued. Unknown Worlds has confirmed that the Early Access version will introduce players to a new alien ocean world featuring fresh biomes, expanded exploration systems, and cooperative multiplayer support for up to four players. The studio also plans to deliver regular content updates after launch as development continues toward the full release.
The sequel to Subnautica has already generated enormous interest online and remains one of the most anticipated survival games currently in development. After a year dominated by corporate disputes and legal headlines, the focus can now finally return to the game itself.
When Subnautica 2 enters Early Access on May 14, we will find out whether the project can overcome the controversy that has surrounded it for so long. In any case, if the game interests you, you can use our comparator to find the best discounts for Subnautica 2.
