Sunless Skies is a gothic horror RPG that focuses heavily on exploration and narrative storytelling. The game takes place in an alternative universe inspired by the Victorian era but with a bit of eerie and steampunk touch. Ten years after the events of Sunless Sea you will play as the captain of an interplanetary locomotive, and you will have to navigate through the stars exploring a vast and dangerous universe composed of four different regions: celestial wilderness, impossible industrial empire, pagan midnight expanse, and the mysterious Blue Kingdom.
You won't be alone in your adventure. You will recruit a crew of unique characters, each of them with their own abilities, stories, and personalities. Every time you depart from your base in a new adventure, you will have to consider very carefully who are you taking with you and how much fuel and food you will need. That is very important because if you run out of resources, you are bound to suffer a terrible death in an unknown place, or even worse.
As you explore the universe, you will discover different locations, factions, and individuals. The kind of relationship that you establish with them is only up to you, but be aware that every decision that you take will have a permanent impact on the game. As you progress through the game, you may also be involved in politics too, having to decide if you support the establishment and your Queen or you want to aid the rebels that oppose them in search of their freedom.
Game mechanics are very easy to understand, but Sunless Skies is a challenging game where you are bound to have many surprises and unexpected turnouts. Balancing your resources, trading goods for profit, discovering unspeakable truths, and staying alive against all the odds will keep you busy as the story of your captain progresses. But don´t worry, because if you die you will leave your inheritance to a successor that will continue your lineage, and maybe he can do it a bit better than his ancestors.
