How to Activate a Steam Product Key

If you purchased a Steam product from a third-party retailer, here’s how to activate a game using a Steam activation key or code. A key is an alphanumeric code (letters and numbers) that you’ll usually find inside the game’s packaging or in the confirmation email the retailer sends.

Got a brand-new digital Steam key? Congratulations, you’re now the proud owner of a new game! All that’s left is to activate it, and it only takes a few simple steps.

Steps to activate a Steam game with a CD key:

From application :

1. If you haven’t already, download the Steam client here. Once installed, create an account and log in.

2. In the Steam client, click Games in the menu bar at the top of the window. Select "Activate a Product on Steam".

3. Enter your Steam activation key when prompted.

4. Once the activation is successful, a confirmation message will appear. Then click Install to start downloading the game, or choose Cancel if you prefer to install it later. Either way, the game will be added to your Steam Library.

Good to know: You can also access the activation option by clicking + Add a Game in the bottom-left corner of the Steam client, then selecting Activate a Product on Steam...

From a web browser :

You don’t have to use the Steam client to activate your key. Steam also allows you to register a key directly from a web browser.

1. Sign in to your Steam account using your web browser.

2. Go to the Register a Product on Steam page.

3. Enter your Steam activation key.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation.

After activating your CD key:

• Your game will automatically appear in your Steam Library. The game license is associated with the Steam account on which you activated the key. You can therefore download and reinstall the game on another computer by signing in with the same account.
• If you change computers or need to replace a faulty hard drive, your game will remain associated with your Steam account. Simply install Steam, sign in to the same account, and download the game again from your Library.

Change the game installation location:

If you want to install your games on another drive or in a different location, open the Steam client and go to Steam > Settings > Storage.

Troubleshooting common CD key issues:

• Invalid key: First, make sure you entered the code correctly. Pay particular attention to characters that can easily be confused. If Steam still reports that the key is invalid, contact the retailer you purchased the key from. Steam Support cannot provide a replacement key for a key purchased from a third-party retailer.
• Duplicate key: This message means that the key has already been activated on a Steam account and cannot be registered a second time. If you received an already-used key from a retailer, contact the retailer directly. Steam Support cannot provide a replacement key.
• Regional restrictions: Some keys purchased from third-party retailers may only be activated in certain countries or regions. These restrictions are determined by the publishers and may vary from one product to another. Make sure to check the activation region specified by the retailer before purchasing your key.

Security tip:

Keep your CD key in a safe place, even after activation. A key from the physical packaging of a game may be requested by Steam Support as proof of account ownership. However, keep in mind that digital keys that do not come from the physical packaging of a game cannot be used as proof of account ownership.
