Set sail in Windrose, the new open-world pirate adventure

Windrose brings back the true pirate fantasy
Early access

The ultimate pirate game might have finally landed, and it’s called Windrose. This is the kind of game many players have been hoping for years to see — something that lets you live the pirate fantasy without holding your hand too much. No forced story, no narrow path. Just you, your ship, and a wide sea full of things to discover, fight, and build.

You begin with very little and work your way up. A basic ship, limited gear, and a world that doesn’t wait for you. From there, it’s all about making your own progress. Sail from island to island, gather what you need, upgrade your ship, and slowly build something that actually feels like yours. Some areas feel calm and quiet, others are more dangerous, pushing you into fights or forcing you to plan your next move carefully. You’re not just sailing around either. You’ll step on land, explore ruins, collect materials, and deal with enemies face-to-face.

A perfect blend of Black Flag and Valheim

What makes Windrose interesting is how it combines different ideas without feeling messy. The sailing and ship battles clearly remind people of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, especially when you’re chasing ships or getting into fights on open water. Then you have the survival and building side, which feels much closer to Valheim. Gathering resources, crafting, and improving your setup little by little — it’s all there, and it fits surprisingly well with the pirate theme.

So far, players seem to like what they’re getting. Reviews are already very positive, which says a lot considering the game is still in Early Access. People are enjoying the freedom, the pacing, and the fact that you’re not constantly pushed in one direction. Of course, it’s not finished yet. Some parts feel a bit light, and certain systems could use more depth. The developers have mentioned that it could take a couple of years before everything is fully complete.

Even with that in mind, the base experience already feels strong. It’s the kind of game where you can see the potential right away. If the updates keep improving what’s already here, this could easily turn into one of the go-to pirate games people keep coming back to.
