Release date Gameplay

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II has officially launched today as part of the opening celebrations for the 2026 edition of the Warhammer Skulls festival. The sequel to the critically praised tactical strategy game from Bulwark Studios arrives nearly eight years after the original title introduced players to the machine-worshipping Adeptus Mechanicus and their grim battles against the Necrons.

Two campaigns, new factions

Released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II expands the formula of its predecessor with a larger campaign, overhauled tactical systems, and, for the first time, the ability to play from both sides of the conflict. Players can command either the Adeptus Mechanicus or the Necron dynasties as war erupts across the mysterious world of Hekateus IV.

The sequel places a stronger emphasis on faction identity and strategic choice. Each side features its own campaign structure, units, and combat mechanics, offering different approaches to battlefield tactics. Developers have also introduced a more dynamic narrative system designed to give player decisions greater impact throughout the story.

One of the notable additions to the sequel is the inclusion of the Leagues of Votann, who enter the conflict as a third-party force influencing events behind the scenes. While not directly playable, their presence adds another layer of tension to the struggle for control of the planet’s ancient technology and buried secrets.

Today’s launch coincides with the tenth anniversary of Warhammer Skulls, Games Workshop's annual showcase dedicated to Warhammer video games. The event traditionally features major announcements, trailers, updates, and discounts across numerous Warhammer titles, and Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II has emerged as one of this year’s headline releases.

Anticipation for the sequel has been strong among strategy fans and longtime Warhammer players alike. The original Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus built a loyal audience thanks to its atmospheric presentation, deep tactical gameplay, and memorable soundtrack. Many fans have also contributed to shaping the sequel into a better game with their feedback thanks to the official demo.

The launch of Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II marks another major expansion of Games Workshop’s growing video game portfolio, continuing the publisher's push to bring the grim darkness of the far future to an even wider audience.
