Silver Pines: a missing-person case turned into a nightmare
Some missing-person investigations involve knocking on doors, asking awkward questions and filling out paperwork. Silver Pines has a slightly different approach: send a private investigator into a deserted town where reality appears to be falling apart, give him limited ammunition, and let the monsters handle the welcoming committee.
Silver Pines is a survival horror adventure from Wych Elm that combines classic horror mechanics with Metroidvania exploration, detective work and a dose of surrealism. The result is a game that wears its love for psychological horror on its sleeve without simply becoming another nostalgia-powered remake of a 1990s classic. The story follows private investigator Red Walker, who travels to the mysterious town of Silver Pines while searching for missing musician Eddie Velvet. Unfortunately for Red, finding the missing man turns out to be considerably more complicated than he expected. The town appears largely abandoned, but its empty streets and buildings are hiding plenty of unpleasant surprises.
Silver Pines is more than another Silent Hill-inspired game
It is impossible to discuss Silver Pines without mentioning the obvious influences. The game draws heavily from survival horror titles like Silent Hill: Townfall, while its strange characters, unsettling atmosphere and increasingly bizarre events evoke the world of surreal neo-noir. However, the game's mos interesting feature is its Metroidvania-style structure.
The town of Silver Pines is effectively a giant puzzle box. Players explore interconnected areas, discover blocked paths, obtain new equipment and abilities, and then return to previously visited locations to uncover new routes. In other words, that suspicious-looking door you couldn't open twenty minutes ago might become very important later.
The familiar survival horror formula is also firmly in place. Red Walker can fight the creatures lurking around Silver Pines, but resources are limited. Ammunition, healing items and inventory space all need to be
The investigation surrounding Eddie Velvet connects everything in the game. Red's objective is to discover what happened to the missing musician, which means examining the environment, finding clues and piecing together the story of Silver Pines. The town itself becomes part crime scene, part labyrinth and part nightmare. Silver Pines encourages curiosity. And, as is generally the case in horror games, curiosity is probably going to get Red into trouble.
The art style is Silver Pines' secret weapon
Silver Pines features a distinctive visual presentation. The game uses rotoscoped animation and stylised 2.5D visuals to create a world that feels familiar and completely wrong at the same time. Its environments evoke a recognisable version of small-town America, but the strange inhabitants and creatures gradually turn that familiarity into something much more unsettling. Everything looks just grounded enough to feel real before something bizarre happens and reminds you that Silver Pines is absolutely not a normal town.
Why does Silver Pines stand out?
Silver Pines combines mechanics from a variety of genres and somehow comes out with something that feels unusually coherent. The game's dark and oppressive atmosphere contributed to delivering a dark experience set in a world that is both mysterious and unpredictable.
For players who miss the slow exploration, resource management and psychological weirdness of classic survival horror but want something with its own identity, Silver Pines looks like an intriguing alternative. Its mixture of survival horror, detective mystery, Metroidvania exploration and surreal storytelling make it worthy of a look.
