Players are falling in love with MOUSE: P.I. For Hire

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is one of 2026’s biggest surprise hits

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire looked like one of those games people would share online for a few days because of the art style and then forget about a month later. Instead, it turned into one of the biggest surprise hits of the year. The second you see it in motion, you understand why. The game looks like a lost cartoon from the 1930s, but behind the old-school black-and-white visuals is a chaotic shooter packed with explosions, mobsters, secret rooms, weird weapons, and fast movement that feels straight out of the classic FPS era.

You play as private investigator Jack Pepper, cleaning up the streets of Mouseburg while uncovering corruption and dealing with gangs, crooked politicians, and all kinds of cartoon madness. The mix of noir detective vibes and over-the-top action gives the game a personality most shooters today completely lack. Every reload animation, enemy reaction, and boss fight feels handcrafted. Nothing about it looks generic. Even the soundtrack deserves credit because the jazz music fits the atmosphere perfectly without getting repetitive.

This cartoon shooter is selling way beyond expectations

What is even crazier is how well the game is actually selling. Early on, a lot of people assumed MOUSE would become a small cult indie game with a loyal fanbase. That prediction aged badly. Reports now suggest the game has already sold around 730,000 copies across all platforms and generated more than $20 million in gross sales. For a game that looked this risky and different, those numbers are huge. The massive wishlist count before release clearly carried over into launch sales, and word of mouth has kept the momentum going.

The reception from players has been strong almost everywhere. Steam reviews are sitting in the “Very Positive” range, with players praising the gunplay, visual style, soundtrack, and the amount of effort put into the animations. A lot of people are comparing the game to Cuphead, mainly because both titles proved that unique art direction can instantly separate a game from the crowd when the gameplay is also solid.
