Santa Monica Studio delays God of War Laufey to May, 2027

We have some bad news if you had February 16 marked on your calendar, God of War Laufey has been delayed. Santa Monica Studio, the team behind the God of War series, has moved the game back by just over three months and confirmed the new release date is May 20, 2027.

The new release date of God of War Laufey

The long-awaited God of War Laufey was initially set to launch for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. Following the latest update from Santa Monica Studio on November 4, 2026, that date is no longer applicable. The title has been delayed by roughly three months, with a new confirmed release date of May 20, 2027.

God of War Laufey is a new mainline entry in the series, and it stars Faye, Kratos' deceased wife, instead of the Ghost of Sparta we’ve followed for years. After her death, she ends up in a mysterious realm called the Everywhen, where she fights monsters, creatures from many mythologies, and even gods in order to save her Kratos and Atreus. Her companions include a talking gelatinous cube and a talking sword sash.

So why May?

This part is our reading, not something the studio had confirmed, but moving the release date to May gives the game breathing room from a crowded run of releases early next year, including Sony's own Until Dawn 2 on January 28. The delay could also mean Sony will have at least one first-party game out in the spring quarter of 2027.

While delays are always disappointing for those ready to jump back into the world of Kratos and Atreus, a three-month adjustment is relatively minor in the context of modern AAA game development. Rather than pushing out a version of the game that might not fully realize the developers' vision, the studio opted to move the launch date to May. This extra time will likely be utilized for final bug fixes, performance optimization, and general quality assurance efforts across the PlayStation 5 version.

In the meantime, we should keep an eye on official PlayStation channels for any further updates or promotional material leading up to the new May release. Either way, DLCompare will help you find the lowest price on God of War Laufey once pre-orders go live.
