Gears 5 breaks records the weekend after its launch

It's true that the Gears of Wars series has a lot of fans, but it's also true that nobody was expecting that Gears 5 was going to have such good numbers so early after its release, especially if you consider that the market is packed with good first-person shooters. During the weekend, over three million players have enjoyed Gears 5 gameplay. That, according to Microsoft, has allowed the game to become the most-played Xbox Game Studios title in its first week since Halo 4, and doubling the numbers of its predecessor Gears of War 4. On PC the numbers are not small either, and Gears 5 has become the biggest-ever launch for Xbox Game Pass for PC, and Xbox Game Studios’ best-ever debut on Steam.

It's worthy of mention that the final push to those numbers comes from the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, which lets you just download the game and play it as much as you want just for the monthly fee of the service instead of having to pay the full amount for the ownership of the title. In a time when we are about to see the launch of Stadia, one can't stop wondering if subscription services are going to be the main trend for video games in the close future.
