Demos

Sword Art Online fans now have one more reason to look forward to July, as Echoes of Aincrad has officially released its demo on Steam. This marks the first opportunity for players to get hands-on with Bandai Namco’s upcoming action RPG before its worldwide launch on July 10, 2026.

Get an Early Taste of Survival in Aincrad

Unlike most previous Sword Art Online titles, Echoes of Aincrad does not place players in the role of Kirito. Instead, it allows them to create their own character and experience the world of Aincrad from the perspective of a player trapped inside the infamous death game. Players will explore the early floors of the floating castle, engage in real-time action combat, and forge their own path through a struggle for survival.

One of the reasons Echoes of Aincrad has attracted so much attention from the community is its stronger focus on role-playing and player immersion compared to earlier Sword Art Online projects. Rather than simply following familiar protagonists, players are given the chance to experience life within Aincrad themselves, encounter iconic characters from the franchise, and take part in an entirely new story.

This demo also offers a valuable opportunity to see whether the game's ambitions translate into an engaging experience. Players can test the combat system firsthand, experiment with different weapon types, familiarize themselves with companion mechanics, and explore a portion of the game world before deciding whether they want to join the adventure when it officially launches.

For those who have been waiting for a Sword Art Online game that truly lets them create their own character and live within the world of Aincrad, this demo may be worth trying right away. Rather than relying solely on trailers or preview footage, it provides the clearest look yet at what Echoes of Aincrad is aiming to deliver.

Playing as Kirito in every single SAO game was getting repetitive. Making a custom character this time makes way more sense. Downloading the Steam demo is probably a good idea just to check out the combat and see if the game is actually good before buying it in July.
