Battlefield 6 confirms no console-only crossplay option
EA has officially clarified how crossplay will work in Battlefield 6, following confusion caused by earlier developer statements. While Ripple Effect’s Matthew Nickerson previously suggested that turning crossplay off would still allow PlayStation and Xbox players to squad up together, EA has now confirmed this will not be the case when the game launches on October 10.
When crossplay is enabled on consoles, matchmaking will prioritize other console users first. However, if additional players are needed to fill a lobby, PC users will be added to the pool—meaning console players could still face off against PC opponents. Importantly, disabling crossplay removes this pool entirely, restricting players to their own platform only, whether PlayStation or Xbox. PC users, meanwhile, will not have the option to disable crossplay at all. The clarification was first reported by Dexerto, who attended a recent Battlefield 6 capture event.
Disabling Crossplay Will Lock Players to Their Own Platform
This revelation has sparked renewed debate about balance and fairness, with many console players citing the inherent advantages of PC—mouse and keyboard precision, higher frame rates, and more flexible hardware—as reasons to prefer console-only matchmaking. EA has stressed that its anti-cheat systems will remain “extremely aggressive,” though developers admitted to Dexerto that they will “never win” the battle against cheaters completely.
This is not the first time Battlefield 6’s mechanics have raised questions within the community. Just recently, DICE addressed feedback from the open beta regarding underpowered vehicles, promising tuning adjustments ahead of launch.
With less than a month until release, these clarifications may temper expectations while still leaving room for EA and DICE to refine matchmaking over time. Battlefield has always thrived on large-scale, combined-arms warfare, and smooth crossplay functionality will be key to ensuring healthy lobbies across platforms.
