Nintendo has officially announced that it will release Yoshi and the Mysterious Book on May 21, 2026. The game is a platformer adventure that also features creature-collection elements.
Yoshi the dinosaur accidentally finds a talking picture book named Mr. E (a luxurious encyclopedia with a mustache). Mr. E has lost all the content and memories within his pages.
To help this new friend, Yoshi decides to jump into the world inside the book to explore, research, and find information about the strange creatures living there. However, the young Bowser Jr. also suddenly appears within these pages and seems to be plotting something mysterious.
The game offers a cozy platformer-sandbox experience. Instead of just running from the beginning to the end of a level like a traditional platformer, each level (or book chapter) is a sandbox-style habitat. Players will interact with strange creatures by feeding them, riding them, carrying them around, throwing eggs, or throwing them at other objects to see their reactions. Those interactions will be crucial to solve puzzles and progress through the levels. Upon discovering the unique characteristics of a creature (for example, feeding a creature an apple so it blows a giant bubble to help Yoshi reach high places), players will solve puzzles and receive Stars.
After completing research on a creature, players can hand-pick a name for that species and save it into Mr. E's encyclopedia. The more stars you collect, the more new pages of the book you will unlock.
The game still features Yoshi's legendary skills, such as the Flutter Jump, the ability to swallow enemies and throw eggs (similar to Yoshi’s Crafted World), with enhanced responsiveness thanks to the new hardware.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book focuses entirely on delivering a fun experience with no time pressure or overly large threats. Yoshi is even virtually impervious to harm (there is no health bar or strictly limited lives), allowing players of all ages (especially children) to focus on exploration.
