EA Sports FC 27 kicks off a new era with The Grounds
Electronic Arts has officially unveiled The Grounds, one of the biggest additions coming to EA Sports FC 27. First teased through leaks earlier this year, the new mode has now been fully revealed with its first gameplay showcase, introducing an expansive online world where players can hang out, compete, and build their football identity beyond the pitch.
Modernizing the franchise with a social layer
Rather than acting as a replacement for Clubs, The Grounds expands the mode into a shared social space. Players can create a personalized avatar, explore a lively football-inspired environment, meet up with friends, and jump directly into matches or activities scattered throughout the world. EA describes the experience as a seamless hub that connects competitive football with a more relaxed community atmosphere.
The open world is packed with different ways to play. In addition to traditional 11v11 Clubs matches, players can participate in fast-paced Rush games, including 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 formats. The Grounds also features skill challenges, freestyle competitions, mini-games, and training activities, giving players plenty to do even when they're not chasing league victories.
Exploration is another key part of the experience. Instead of navigating menus, players will physically move through different districts of The Grounds to discover events, join matches, or socialize with other football fans. Seasonal updates will introduce new locations, activities, and limited-time events, turning the mode into an evolving destination rather than a static feature.
Customization plays a much larger role than in previous entries. Avatars can be equipped with a wide range of clothing, accessories, celebrations, and animations, allowing every player to stand out. Progression unlocks additional cosmetic rewards as players participate in matches and complete challenges, while clubs can develop their own unique identity within the shared world.
What about the cost?
One topic EA was quick to address is monetization. The developer says purchases in The Grounds will focus on cosmetic items and personalization rather than gameplay advantages. According to the studio, player skill and progression will remain the deciding factors in competitive modes, with no pay-to-win mechanics planned for the experience.
The Grounds is also designed to become the central gathering place for the Clubs community. Friends can meet before matches, spectate ongoing games, join spontaneous competitions, or simply spend time exploring together. EA believes this social layer will make the mode feel more alive and encourage players to keep returning between competitive sessions.
There is one important limitation, however. The Grounds will only be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the original Nintendo Switch will still have access to EA Sports FC 27, but the new open-world mode won't be included due to the technical demands of the feature.
With The Grounds, EA Sports FC 27 is taking its most ambitious step since the franchise left the FIFA name behind with EA Sports FC 24. By blending football, exploration, social features, and live-service content into a single online world, EA is betting that the future of virtual football is about much more than what happens during the 90 minutes on the pitch. It seems that the game will definitely change the direction of the franchise, and if you don't want to miss it, you canuse our comparator to pre-order EA Sports FC 27 at the cheapest price today.
