Updates & Patches

The Emperor has apparently decided that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 still doesn't contain quite enough ways to make its players question their life choices. Saber Interactive has officially unveiled the Confrontation Update, the latest major content drop for the third-person shooter and the grand finale of its second year of post-launch support.

What's in the Confrontation update?

The new update arrives with a fresh trailer showing off what awaits players, and there's plenty packed into this final Year 2 offering. The biggest additions include two new PvP maps for Eternal War, giving trigger-happy Space Marines and Chaos warriors a couple of new places to conduct their extremely diplomatic discussions.

Things get considerably more unpleasant on the PvE side, too. The update introduces the Thousand Sons Scarab Occult Terminator Sorcerer as a new Terminus enemy. In other words, players already dealing with hordes of Tyranids and Chaos forces now have another heavily armoured nightmare to worry about. Because apparently regular Terminators weren't sufficiently stressful.

The Confrontation Update also expands the arsenal with six new Heroic weapons. These provide yet more opportunities for players to solve problems using the traditional Space Marine approach: overwhelming amounts of ammunition, excessive violence and absolutely no interest in negotiating.

Customization receives a substantial boost as well. New armour pieces and cosmetic options give players more ways to make their Space Marines look suitably magnificent while stomping through the galaxy. The update also delivers the final Season Pass 2 cosmetic DLC, bringing the second season of post-launch goodies to its conclusion. Among the new cosmetics are additions inspired by the Salamanders, including a Champion armour set for the Heavy class. It's a fitting way to send Year 2 off, particularly for players who prefer their genetically enhanced super-soldiers to come equipped with a little extra volcanic swagger.

And then there's the rather important bit of news hiding underneath all the new guns, armour and things trying to murder you: Year 3 has already been confirmed. So although Confrontation marks the end of the game's second year of post-launch content, it isn't remotely the end of Space Marine 2. That's particularly good news for a game that has continued to expand well beyond its original launch package. New modes, weapons, enemies, maps and customization options have steadily transformed Space Marine 2 into an increasingly enormous playground for anyone who believes the correct response to a galaxy-spanning catastrophe is to grab a chainsword and start swinging.

The Confrontation Update is available now, bringing Year 2 to a suitably violent conclusion. Two new PvP maps, a terrifying Thousand Sons Terminus enemy, six Heroic weapons and a fresh collection of cosmetics should give veterans plenty of reasons to return. And with Year 3 already on the horizon, it seems the Adeptus Astartes won't be getting much of a holiday. Frankly, considering the state of the 41st Millennium, they probably wouldn't know what to do with one anyway.
